The Laboratory Coordinator supports instructional laboratories, undergraduate research, and departmental operations within the Biology and Chemistry Departments. This position is responsible for preparing and maintaining teaching laboratories, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, assisting faculty and students during lab activities, managing laboratory supplies and equipment, and supporting hands‑on, inquiry‑based learning experiences aligned with the departments’ academic mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Prepare laboratory materials, reagents, cultures, and equipment for biology and chemistry teaching laboratories.
- Prepare and standardize solutions.
- Accurately prepare, sterilize, and pour LB (Luria Broth) agar plates, including antibiotic selection plates, using aseptic techniques.
- Operate autoclaves to sterilize glassware, media, and biohazardous waste.
- Inspect prepared media and poured plates for sterility, contamination, and appropriate consistency.
- Monitor, track, and restock media supplies, reagents, and laboratory consumables.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory benches and equipment.
- Properly label, date, and log all prepared materials and sterilization cycles.
- Set up and break down laboratory sessions in accordance with course schedules.
- Assist faculty during laboratory sessions as needed.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and coordinate repairs.
- Enforce OSHA regulations, manage hazardous waste disposal, and maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Provide technical assistance to undergraduate students.
- Support faculty‑led research and experiential learning initiatives.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field.
- Laboratory experience in academic, clinical, or research settings.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry.
- Experience supporting undergraduate teaching labs and research.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs.
