Florida A&M University's Facilities, Planning, Construction and Safety Department is pleased to announce the acceptance of qualified applications for the Coordinator, Environmental Health and Safety (

Working Title:

Chemical Safety Officer) vacancy.

Responsibilities

All Functions are Essential:
This position reports to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety in the Facilities, Planning, Construction and Safety Department.

Serve as the University Chemical Safety Officer;
Coordinate hazardous waste and universal waste program and manages waste pickups;
Conduct inspections of waste areas;
Support research in the review of standard operating procedures and performs laboratory inspections;
Verify chemical inventories and assists with job hazard analysis for chemical use.

Perform due diligence on selection of waste vendors;
Serve as primary point of contact for hazardous waste vendor;
Maintain hazardous waste facility according to applicable regulations;
Monitor waste generator status and provides updated notification if needed;
Review hazardous waste manifests for accuracy and signs on behalf of the University.

Ensure spill control supplies are available in all appropriate areas and training and assist in clean-up of minor spills;
Provide chemical safety, laboratory safety and hazardous waste training;
Maintain and update online training for chemical, laboratory safety and hazardous waste;
Ensure that the Chemical Safety Committee meet regularly and achieves its objectives.

Perform/oversee lab inspections, including fume hood and eyewash/shower inspections;
Provide inspection reports to PI's, Deans and Department Heads and oversees/verifies corrective actions;
Assist Director with development of reports, programs, policies and procedures to improve safety and environmental compliance;
Conducts accident and injury investigations as needed; and provide assistance to Plant Operations & Maintenance and Campus Services regarding training needs and Job Hazard Analysis (also known as Job Safety Analysis or Workplace Hazard Assessment).

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience; or master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization

Recommended Competencies

Knowledge of, or familiarity with, the following programs in a university setting: chemical and biological safety, material handling, hazardous waste rules and regulations, and environmental stewardship;

Experience with Word, Excel, databases;

Knowledge of chemical properties and hazards, occupational safety principles (e.g., use of personal protective equipment, engineering controls, chemical labeling);

OSHA regulations (e.g., OSHA Laboratory Standard, OSHA Standards for specific chemicals and other applicable regulations such as EPA, DEP, NFPA.; laboratory operations, procedures and techniques; chemical waste management techniques; proper hazardous waste handling and storage procedures;

Knowledge and ability to use computers and computer databases;

Ability to conduct technical, science-based training programs; communicate and transfer information effectively at all organizational levels and to diverse audiences;

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty and staff through strong interpersonal skills; and effective oral and written communication;

Ability to deal with all types of individuals including those who may be under duress at the time of contact;

Ability to maintain effective working relationships within the department;

Ability to work under pressure completing time sensitive projects;

Ability to respond to sensitive situations in a professional and diplomatic manner; and,

Ability to coordinate, recommend, and interpret departmental and University policy in health and safety.

Anticipated Salary Range

The salary range is between $65,000 to $70,000 commensurate with relevant experience.

Licenses and Certifications

Must maintain a valid Driver's License.
