Job Specifications
The City of Tallahassee is seeking Underground Utilities Technicians to support the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater systems. This position offers a career path with opportunities to build skills, complete certifications, and advance through progressively complex work.
What You'll Do:
* Perform hands-on work supporting the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater systems
* Assist with installation of meters, valve boxes, manholes (underground access points), and related infrastructure components
* Operate trucks and equipment such as dump trucks, flatbeds, crew trucks, and pickups
* Use hand tools and power tools (such as drills, saws, and jackhammers) to complete assigned tasks
* Assist with trenching, back filling, concrete work, and restoration of construction areas
* Perform site clean-up, including seeding, mulching, and re-sodding of work areas
* Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition
* Assist higher-level technicians with water and wastewater system operations and repairs
* Respond to emergency situations and participate in on-call or standby assignments
* Participate in on-the-job and classroom training to develop skills and obtain required certifications

Minimum Training & Experience
Applies to All Levels:
* Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent recognized certificate.
Underground Utilities Technician I:
* Entry-level; no prior experience required
Underground Utilities Technician II:
* Two years of experience in utility construction and/or operation of utility construction related equipment; or
* Two years of experience that includes utility distribution or collection; or
* Two years of experience as an Underground Utility Technician I.
Underground Utilities Technician III:
* Two years of experience as an Underground Utility Technician II, or in an equivalent position, in an area that involves:
* Journey Level Technicians: utility distribution or collection, maintenance and repair.
* Specialty Equipment Operations: utility construction, maintenance or repair and/or operation of specialized utility construction, maintenance or repair equipment.
* Water Measurement Technicians: testing, repairing and calibrating water meters.
Necessary
Special Requirements
Applies to All Levels:
* Must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse
* Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment (Class E minimum; higher-level CDL required based on level)
Underground Utilities Technician I:
* Must obtain a commercial learner's permit (CLP) within three (3) months from the date of appointment
* Must obtain a Class A State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with required endorsement(s) within nine (9) months, as a condition of continued employment.
* Must obtain a Florida Water and Pollution Control Operator's Association (FW&PCOA) Class "C" Collections Certification or Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FL DEP) Level "III" Distribution License, and attend and pass the internal training courses and exams designated for this job class within 24 months.
