The City of Tallmadge is seeking a forward-thinking Assistant Superintendent of Utilities to help lead our Utilities Department. In this critical leadership role, you won't just be sitting behind a desk, you will be the bridge between high-level administrative planning and on-the-ground field operations.

You will serve as the right hand to the Utility Superintendent, providing direct backup and helping to drive major community infrastructure improvements, including exciting upcoming initiatives like waterline replacement and the sanitary sewer rehabilitation projects.

Who We Are Looking For:

We are looking for a solutions-oriented leader who understands municipal utility infrastructure, respects PERRP safety standards, and has a proven track record of supervising field crews and managing regulatory compliance.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Lead in the Field and in the Office:
    Direct daily field operations, oversee crews, and schedule work orders while also assisting with long-range strategic planning and budget preparation.
  • Ensure Public Health and Safety:
    Champion our community's well-being by ensuring strict compliance with Ohio EPA regulations and maintaining high engineering standards for our water and sewer utilities.
  • Build and Mentor a Strong Team:
    Manage, train, and coach our dedicated utility staff, fostering a culture of safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
  • Be a Community Ambassador:
    Interact directly with Tallmadge residents and community groups to resolve concerns and promote our department's vital services.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general direction, the Assistant Utilities Superintendent assists in overseeing the long-range operations, planning, budgeting, and regulatory compliance of the Utility Department. The position provides organizational leadership and administrative support, including policy development, budget monitoring, EPA compliance, and personnel management, while also directing daily field operations, overseeing crews, scheduling work orders, visiting work sites to provide instruction, and acting on behalf of the Utility Superintendent in their absence.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

Calculator, computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, telephone, cellular telephone, postage machine, and other standard modern business office equipment; motor vehicle.

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Employee ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); works in an area which the means of egress is or can be obstructed; is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants, hazardous waste, unclean or unsanitary conditions from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas;

is exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db (e.g., heavy equipment, trucks, etc.); works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons or vicious animals or life threatening situations; participates in medical and first aid activities; is periodically exposed to blood and other bodily fluids, as well as other potentially infectious materials;

has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather…
