Job FunctionA daily substitute teacher fills in for the classroom teacher (K-8th grade) in their temporary absence. The substitute follows constructed lesson plans and daily activities while guiding students in the classroom setting.
Duties and Responsibilities- Maintain a well‑managed classroom and a safe, positive learning environment.
- Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground, and in the cafeteria.
- Follow and implement lesson plans, classwork, homework, and tests. If needed, may attend parent‑teacher conferences.
- Provide appropriate material and resources for students to engage in learning.
- Compile a report for the teacher that includes student attendance, lesson‑plan progress, disciplinary actions, and positive developments.
- Have knowledge of emergency evacuation routes, school procedures, and classroom regulations.
- Support the school in fostering an organizational culture of faith, continuous learning, quality, integrity, mutual respect, and Catholic values.
- Model the expectations of the school and diocese in alignment with the mission and vision.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.
All employees must respect the teachings and discipline of the Church regarding matters of faith and morals, including maintaining a lifestyle that aligns with Catholic doctrine.
Educational Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in education or an education‑related field.
- Teaching certification is a plus.
- Attend a Protecting God's Children class and Mandated Reporter Training.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and supervise an educational program set by the classroom teacher.
- Communicate effectively with parents, students, and co‑workers in a positive and enthusiastic manner.
- Understand child development and possess the necessary skills to relate to students.
- Understand supervision of employees and possess communication skills necessary for collegial relationships with adults and volunteers.
- Handle classroom situations with fairness and patience.
- Maintain high energy and respond calmly to overwhelming or difficult situations.
- Maintain confidentiality, credibility, integrity, and self‑confidence.
Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, NSOR, and FBI Criminal Background Fingerprint Check as required under Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Act 153 of 2014 (at least 1 year old).
Physical DemandsThe employee must regularly stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear; frequently use equipment with repetitive motions and computer eye fatigue; and may be exposed to bacteria and communicable diseases. Occasional reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, or moving small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom items may be required. Vocal communication and visual acuity are necessary for seeing and interpreting information.
WorkingConditions
Normal classroom setting with hours 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. as needed, Monday through Friday. May need to work outside normal hours for meetings, open houses, and workshops.
