Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for custodial, maintenance, and groundskeeping responsibilities.
  • Ability to perform routine building maintenance and operate custodial equipment safely.
  • Ability to work independently and follow direction from building principals, maintenance supervisors, and district administration.
Reports To

Building Principal, Maintenance Supervisor, or other personnel as directed by the Superintendent.

Job Goal

To provide students and staff with safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient facilities in which to learn, play, and develop.

Role

The Custodian is responsible for the daily cleanliness, safety, security, and general maintenance of school buildings and grounds. This position supports the instructional program by ensuring that facilities are properly maintained, operational, and conducive to a positive educational environment.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Ability to stand and walk continuously throughout the workday, including walking distances of up to 100 yards or more at a time.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as required for building maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach repeatedly during cleaning and maintenance activities.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds routinely

  • Ability to operate custodial and maintenance equipment, including floor machines, vacuums, buffers, mowers, snow removal equipment, and hand tools.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
  • Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods of time.
Terms of Employment

Work year, schedule, and compensation to be established by the School District Board of Directors in accordance with district policy and applicable agreements.

Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of support personnel.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Maintain cleanliness of buildings and premises, including classrooms, corridors, restrooms, sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, and play areas.
  • Regulate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to maintain appropriate seasonal temperatures and ensure economical use of utilities.
  • Sweep classrooms daily, dust furniture, and clean corridors after school and as needed during the day.
  • Scrub, disinfect, and maintain restroom facilities, including floors, fixtures, and drinking fountains, on a daily basis.
  • Wash interior and exterior windows at least twice annually, or more frequently as needed.
  • Remove rubbish and maintain school grounds free of debris.
  • Shovel, plow, and sand sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as required.
  • Ensure designated exit doors are operational during building occupancy and maintain proper building security by unlocking and locking doors as instructed.
  • Raise and lower the United States flag in accordance with school schedules.
  • Perform minor building repairs within the scope of ability and promptly report major repair needs to the principal or maintenance supervisor.
  • Maintain motors and mechanical equipment requiring routine service scheduling.
  • Immediately report any damage to school property to the building principal.
  • Remain on school premises during school hours and during authorized non-school hours when required.
  • Assume responsibility for opening and closing the building daily, ensuring doors and windows are secured and lights are turned off except where safety requires otherwise.
