Overview of the Position The U.S. Pretrial Services Office for the Middle District of Florida is currently accepting applications for the position of Pretrial Services Officer Assistant (Temporary) in Tampa, Florida. The Middle District of Florida consists of five divisions:
Jacksonville, Ocala, Orlando, Tampa, and Fort Myers. The assignment of a duty location is at the discretion of the chief pretrial services officer. More than one position may be filled from this recruitment. This position will be under the direct supervision of a supervisory pretrial services officer.

The incumbent will assist officers in performing pretrial investigations, assist in supervision of persons on pretrial release or diversion, and notify court regarding status and violations, and conduct record checks.

Position Description

Representative Duties:

  • Assists pretrial services officers in gathering and verifying criminal records and personal history information of persons charged with federal criminal offenses. Information is gathered from law enforcement officers, prosecutors, family members, employers, and other collateral sources. Automated databases are queried for information.
  • Assists officers with preparing written reports to the court prior to defendant’s initial appearance, detention, or violation hearing. Attend court hearings (initial, detention or violation) to provide additional information.
  • Assists officers with supervision of selected caseloads which may include telephone contacts, home visits, and community contacts. Assists with maintaining case records through national databases.
  • Collects observed urine specimens from same gender defendants and maintain appropriate records
  • Assist officers and non-English speaking offenders, family members, in translating speech, documents, and correspondence.
  • Perform other appropriate duties as assigned
Qualifications

To qualify for the position of pretrial services officer assistant, the incumbent must be a high school graduate or equivalent and must not have reached the age of 37
* at the time of appointment. Applicants must have basic knowledge of the criminal justice system, the ability to give and receive accurate and timely information, the ability to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment. Excellent written and oral communications, good knowledge of, and skill in, the use of computers and software applications.

Minimum Qualifications for CL-23
:
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent and two years of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the possession of, or the ability to acquire, the knowledge and skills needed to perform the position's duties. Valid driver’s license is required.

Minimum Qualifications for CL-24:Must be a high school graduate or equivalent with one year of specialized experience. Specialized experience is progressively responsible clerical or administrative experience requiring the regular and recurring application of clerical procedures that demonstrate the ability to apply a body of rules, regulations, directives or laws and involve the routine use of specialized terminology and automated software and equipment for word processing, data entry or report generation.

Valid driver’s license is required.
