The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County is looking for a Government Operations Consultant I. This position provides advanced operational support and serves as the primary lead worker for the Vital Statistics office. The role ensures compliance with Florida Statutes, Department of Health policies, and Vital Statistics program standards while overseeing daily operations, assisting staff, and supporting management with programmatic responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Performing advanced vital record processing and providing day-to-day operational guidance to staff to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Collecting and posting cash, credit/debit cards, checks, and money orders received to the e-vitals system and issuing a receipt to customers.
  • Counting monies received, closing credit card terminal, and reconciling payments received at the end of each day.
  • Tracking all Safety Paper used daily and verifying that no sheets are missing.
  • Ordering all materials, supplies, safety paper, forms, and equipment required for the Vital Statistics office.
  • Maintaining and managing the State Purchasing Card (P Card), processing and paying invoices, completing purchasing approvals, and performing monthly reconciliation in accordance with fiscal requirements and purchasing policies.
  • Auditing assigned Tax Collector sites twice daily and at the end of each month.
  • Processing requests for birth/death certificates made via Vital Chek (online orders), Mail & Fax.
  • Serving as backup for the daily closeout process when needed, ensuring accurate reconciliation and proper submission of fiscal documentation.
  • Assisting the Program Manager with resolving late or pending death record certifications by contacting funeral homes, physicians, and medical facilities to ensure timely completion.
  • Providing operational coverage at any DOH Hillsborough Vital Statistics location as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to operate commonly used office equipment such as computers, printers, and paper shredder.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access).
  • Ability to perform computer data entry.
  • Ability to handle money, make change, process credit/debit cards, and balance daily transactions against reports.
  • Skilled in providing customer service, both face-to-face and over the phone.
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of correct grammar usage.
  • Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to follow instructions and ensure confidentiality.
  • Ability to follow laws pertaining to the processing of birth and death certificates.
  • Ability to file and alphabetize correctly.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years of customer service experience.
  • Two years of vital statistics experience.
  • Two years of monitoring safety paper experience.
  • A valid driver's license.
