Summary

The Tampa VA Healthcare System's Surgery Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Board Certified Cardio Thoracic Surgeon. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards – as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program. You must be an excellent communicator and team player who is adaptable to the needs of a growing medical center.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic

Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current – full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States (or District of Columbia)
  • Residency training:
    Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program (Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery) leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Approved residencies are: (1) ACGME‑approved; (2) AOA‑approved; or (3) Other residencies (non‑US) followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States considered appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Board certification in Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery is required by VA policy in specific circumstances (e.g., supervising residents or holding faculty status with an affiliated medical school)
  • Physical requirements:

    Must pass a pre‑employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019 and be able to perform moderate lifting, reach, and other tasks described in the job announcement
  • The incumbent must be physically, emotionally, and mentally stable to efficiently perform the essential functions of this position without hazard to themselves or others
Duties
  • Provide the full spectrum of operative and non‑operative management of patients, including coronary revascularization, mitral valve repair, aortic root repair, valve sparing aortic root replacement, ascending aortic aneurysm repair, redo‑cardiac surgery, TAVR, minimal access cardiac surgery, and maze procedure
  • Required to teach medical students and residents
  • Additional clinical responsibilities include scheduled on‑call coverage during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
