The Radiation Oncologist is responsible for all functions which fall under the scope of care of Radiation Oncology Service (ROS). These include clinical and administrative management, either directly or through delegated authority of the following:
- Initial patient evaluation.
- Patient simulation, radiation treatment plan and prescription.
- Patient management during treatment.
- Follow‑up care post treatment.
- Consultation with other services.
- Provide emergency care.
- Research initiatives.
- Resident supervision/education.
- Works with and is supported by Radiation Oncology Service leadership. Provides direct clinical and administrative oversight for mid‑level practitioners, physics, dosimetry, radiation therapists and other clinical staff as assigned.
- Responsible for providing services in an efficient, high‑quality, cost‑effective manner within budget allocation.
- Works directly with Chief, Radiation Oncology Service to assist in ensuring adequate and appropriate staffing. Participates in recruitment, hiring, evaluation and disciplinary actions for staff.
- Works with the Chief, Radiation Oncology Service and other staff as appropriate, supports operations issues/problems resolution in a logical, stepwise fashion. Participate in a forum in which staff identify, communicate, and resolve issues related to Radiation Oncology Service, Medical Center ancillary and support operations, and VISN‑wide mandates.
- Works with the Chief, Radiation Oncology Service and other disciplines as necessary to support, contribute to and implement policies, procedures, performance goals, strategic plans and initiatives.
- Seeks and enhances opportunities to promote and strengthen the Medical Center's and VISN 8's goals. Responsible for implementing the goal of improving care for patients within the Medical Center and VISN 8.
- Has basic understanding of managed care practices, including health care finance, billing, coding and documentation. Knowledge, ability and willingness to use and promote the dissemination among clinical staff of current automated technology for Health Information Management Sections (HIMS), patient data tracking, patient orders, etc.
- Contributes to the development, maintenance and enhancement of relations with internal and external entities, including but not limited to: medical and nursing schools, local public and private health care entities, colleagues in other Patient Services and Integrated Services, such as Information Technology, Laboratory, and Business Office, labor, and VISN.
- Participates in Radiation Oncology Service strategic planning.
- Participates in local administrative, management, quality assurance, and other assignments, meetings or committees.
- Provides direct patient care as a consultant in outpatient clinics and/or inpatient wards and will participate in the Radiation Oncology Service on‑call schedule.
- Performance reflects and demonstrates support of the Chief, Radiation Oncology Service, Chief of Staff, Medical Center Director's, VISN Network and national goals.
- Participates in regular peer review activities.
