The TECO Energy Internship & Cooperative Education Program offers college degree‑seeking students the opportunity for professional growth while meeting the business needs of the company. The program is an extension of the educational process, providing practical experience to complement formal classroom work. The co‑op program recruits students from colleges to give them an opportunity to work in a professional environment related to their field of study.

Position

Summary

The Student will work with Operation Engineering on distribution system protection, protection coordination, power quality, and reliability. They will investigate reliability referrals, develop action plans to remedy issues, create work requests to implement proposed solutions, and respond to customers once issues have been resolved.

Accountabilities
  • Create and/or process work requests in work management software
  • Estimate electrical loads for customers and determine actual or proposed field measurements.
  • Model proposed designs in the appropriate software to meet customer needs and ensure all results follow respective regulatory requirements
  • Produce construction prints for field construction of proposed designs and attend weekly work scheduling meetings

Working Conditions

Mostly in a normal office environment, a successful candidate will visit field locations approximately weekly. This will include riding in a company vehicle on‑road and off‑road, walking on uneven surfaces, and entering substations.

Preferred Availability

Part‑Time (30 - 40 hours)

Qualifications

Education:

  • The successful applicant should be enrolled in an ABET accredited university or college undergraduate or a graduate level post‑secondary educational program in a related discipline.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required.
  • To qualify as a co‑op student, enrollment in your university’s co‑op program is required.

Position Requirements: Currently pursuing a degree in Engineering

Preferred/Related Discipline: Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical

Year in School: Junior or Senior

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Microsoft Office and Basic Understanding of Power Systems

A pre‑employment drug screening, physical exam, as well as a background check (including employment, criminal and motor vehicle) will also be conducted as part of the pre‑employment screening.

Storm Duty Requirements

Responding to storms will be considered a condition of employment. Team members are required to participate in response/recovery activities related to emergencies/disasters to maintain service to our TECO Energy customers. Team members are required to work in their normal job duties or other assigned activities. Proper compensation will be made in accordance with the company’s rules and procedures.
