Highway Engineer

Full-Time | Tampa, FL (Hybrid options available)

We are seeking a Senior Highway Engineer to lead the delivery of complex transportation projects across Florida. This role is for an experienced highway professional who values technical excellence, understands FDOT standards, and is comfortable serving as a senior technical authority and Engineer of Record.

Florida is rapidly advancing in transportation investment, and this position is vital in delivering high-impact roadway and highway projects throughout the Tampa Bay region. This is a hands-on senior role for an engineer who enjoys leading technical design, guiding teams, and ensuring projects meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and constructability.

This role supports major FDOT roadway initiatives, including corridor improvements, interchange projects, widening efforts, and General Engineering Consultant (GEC) and design-bid-build assignments. You will act as a senior technical leader while collaborating closely with FDOT reviewers and multidisciplinary teams.

• Lead and support the planning, design, and delivery of highway projects for FDOT and regional transportation agencies
• Serve as a senior technical authority and, when appropriate, Engineer of Record on roadway projects
• Perform and review geometric design, including alignments, profiles, cross-sections, and interchange layouts
• Oversee the development and quality control of PS&E packages, including plans, specifications, cost estimates, and bid quantities
• Ensure compliance with FDOT Design Manual (FDM), Standard Plans, Basis of Estimates, AASHTO, and FHWA standards
• Manage technical scopes, schedules, and task-level budgets for assigned design efforts
• Coordinate with traffic, bridge, drainage, and other disciplines to support integrated corridor-level solutions
• Mentor and guide junior engineers and EITs through FDOT design workflows and digital delivery requirements
• Coordinate directly with FDOT reviewers, clients, and project stakeholders
• Support proposal development and client engagement efforts as needed

• Bachelor s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Florida or the ability to obtain it via comity within six months
• 11 to 20 or more years of experience in highway or roadway engineering
• Strong working knowledge of FDOT Design Manual, Standard Plans, and digital delivery practices
• Experience serving as Engineer of Record on roadway projects is strongly preferred
• Proficiency with roadway design software, including Open Roads Designer and Micro Station
• Ability to lead technical design, manage multiple assignments, and mentor engineering staff
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Experience with alternative delivery methods such as Design-Build, CMGC, or P3
• Multi-state DOT experience within the Southeast or Mid-Atlantic
• Experience in construction-phase engineering support
