Overview
The Systems Engineer I - Storage and Backup serves as the primary subject matter expert (SME) for enterprise local and networked storage technologies and data protection platforms, supporting the design, build, implementation, and ongoing operation of storage and backup infrastructure.
This role is responsible for building, configuring, and maintaining storage and backup appliances and associated technologies, ensuring data availability, performance, and recoverability across the environment.
Acting as a technical escalation point for system administrators, the position provides advanced troubleshooting and resolution for incident, request, and project-based work related to storage infrastructure and services.
The Systems Engineer I supports ticketed operational workloads, participates in project implementations and technology refreshes, and collaborates with infrastructure, network, and application teams to ensure storage and backup solutions align with organizational standards, service level objectives, and formal change management practices.
Responsibilities- Provide Subject Matter Expert knowledge in areas that pertain to local, network, and backup storage technologies
- Support the execution of new infrastructure design configurations and technology deployments.
- Perform routine maintenance, patching, and upgrades on physical and virtual servers, storage systems, and related infrastructure.
- Provide escalation support for infrastructure issues, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
- Monitor infrastructure services, identify potential issues, and mitigate unplanned outages or changes.
- Manage server backups and ensure data integrity for critical systems.
- Participate in internal and cross-departmental projects related to infrastructure and technology initiatives.
- Maintain accurate documentation of systems, configurations, and processes; ensure compliance with organizational standards.
- Recommend and implement improvements to enhance system efficiency and stability.
- Assist in applying security patches and configurations to safeguard infrastructure.
- Bachelor’s Degree - field of study: MIS/Information Technology or related field
- Minimum of three (3) years proficiency in a systems engineering and/or technical infrastructure support role in storage and backups, visualization, and/or server platform administration.
- in lieu of a Bachelor's Degree, a High School diploma (or equivalent) plus an additional 4 years of exp (for a total of 7 years) may be considered.
- The Systems Engineer I - Storage role requires hands-on foundational knowledge of enterprise storage architectures, including:
- DAS, NAS, and SAN; practical understanding of block and file storage and associated protocols (Fibre Channel, iSCSI, NFS, SMB/CIFS)
- Experience supporting storage presentation and lifecycle management for Windows Server and Linux systems (LUN provisioning, file systems, mount points, multipath I/O)
- Introductory exposure to virtualized storage within hypervisor environments (e.g., VMware vSphere or Hyper-V, data stores, VMDKs/VHDXs)
- Working familiarity with storage networking concepts such as FC zoning, initiators/targets, VLANs, jumbo frames, and redundancy
- Foundational knowledge of RAID levels, snapshots, replication, backup/restore workflows, and high-availability designs
- Ability to leverage monitoring tools, logs, and performance metrics for capacity and fault analysis
- Completion of formal IT education or equivalent experience, supported by entry-level vendor or industry certifications, with the expectation of performing tasks under established standards and senior engineering oversight.
