Staff Geologist II / Environmental Scientist / Environmental Engineer, Tampa, FL
Halff has an immediate opening for a Staff Geologist II, Environmental Engineer, or Environmental Scientist to join our established and growing team located in our Tampa, FL office. The role involves collaborating with Staff Geologists/Environmental PMs to complete Phase I and Phase II projects, supporting complex projects, coordinating with clients, and supporting field efforts, including all aspects of field work and reporting. The ideal candidate has at least 4 years of experience, can perform field tasks independently, and holds a Professional Geoscientist in training (GIT) with a bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
Responsibilities- Collaborate and provide support of field investigations, including environmental media sampling, groundwater monitoring, and site characterization.
- Support State Departments of Environmental Protection, RCRA, and CERCLA documentation and reporting.
- Complete Phase I and Phase II projects.
- Support field efforts for Department of Defense installations/bases.
- Prepare Phase I ESA Reports, Phase II Reports, Site‑Safety Health Plans, Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPPs), Waste Management Plans, data summary tables/interpretation, and support completion of state‑required regulatory documentation.
- Communicate with clients for property access and site data to support Phase I and Phase II.
- Begin building relationships to become a trusted advisor to clients, both internal and external.
- Be receptive to training and guidance on fieldwork, data interpretation, and reporting.
- Participate in professional development through guidance.
- Stay up‑to‑date with industry trends, technological advancements, and best practices in environmental remediation and compliance.
- Bachelor’s in geology, earth science, or engineering (capable of obtaining a PG or a PE license);
Master’s or Ph.D. a plus. - At least 4 years of experience with Phase I ESA, Phase II ESA, soil sampling, groundwater sampling, site assessment, Brownfields, remediation, groundwater monitoring, and field work.
- Current Professional Geoscientist in training (GIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license, or willing to obtain one within four years.
- Ability to access federal facilities or obtain a Common Access Card (CAC).
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for fieldwork as needed.
- Coordinating and completing technical field investigations for multi‑media environmental sampling projects.
- Understanding of geological principles, soil mechanics, human health and ecological exposure pathways, and preferential pathways.
- Ability to conduct geological fieldwork, including sampling techniques and logging of boreholes and test pits.
- Strong analytical skills to interpret laboratory, technical, and regulatory data accurately.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing technical reports.
- Problem‑solving aptitude to support complex field and reporting challenges.
- Familiarity with relevant industry standards, regulations, and safety protocols.
- Project management skills to oversee multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Ability to learn various State and Federal regulatory programs to achieve cleanup goals and/or site closure.
- Additional skills in regulatory compliance, stormwater, spill prevention, and general permitting requirements a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to support mobilizations/travel for up to 10 days at a time.
- Ability to work prolonged periods sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds.
- Must be able to access and navigate job sites and construction areas.
- Must be able to work prolonged periods in the field (over 8 hours/day) including standing, squatting, and lifting.
- Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, etc.).
- Halff has completed thousands of environmental projects.
- Average tenure of Halff's environmental team leaders is 10 years.
