POSITION CONCEPTThe DCS Specialist is responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining the Station’s Distributed Control System (DCS) hardware and software. Responsibilities include ensuring DCS system reliability, integrity, and health by performing daily backups of DCS computer software and logic changes. Duties also include implementing new DCS logic, modifying existing logic, and replacing and installing DCS hardware. The DCS Specialist coordinates with IT to ensure plant DCS Cyber Security is active, current, and in compliance.
The DCS Specialist administers domains and users within the control networks.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair plant Distributed Control System (DCS), GE Mark VI, and PLC control systems.
- Recognize needs before they arise and take appropriate action.
- Implement, modify, and document plant communications for the Cyber Security plan.
- Support plant equipment modifications by adding, changing, or removing DCS logic and controls.
- Maintain plant third‑party software applications for process monitoring (DBDOC, GRITS, Asset Centre, RSLogix
5000). - Assist TECO Energy Information & Security department with all plant control systems (GE & ABB) for NERC and Emera CSF compliance.
- Interact and communicate daily with process teams, providing technical support, direction, and training to support plant operations and maintenance staff.
- Produce and maintain accurate system records, including logic diagrams, P&s, and alarm management.
- Investigate and analyze new products and procedures and direct personnel in their use. Contact equipment manufacturers to resolve equipment problems.
- Coordinate and provide technical support and quality control for work performed by outside contractors and plant personnel.
- Assist in the station budgeting process and provide annual forecasts of expected contractor manpower levels and contractor costs. Develop budgets for maintenance and improvements to ensure safe and reliable operation of the plant control system.
- Follow all company and plant guidelines and applicable processes, including but not limited to NERC, safety, and environmental standards.
Required:
Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Science with a minimum of 4 years of related experience.
Preferred: ISA Instrumentation & Controls Certification
DCS training, preferably ABB/Bailey.
Required:
Minimum of five (5) years of instrumentation & control experience in a process plant control environment, including development, modification, maintenance, and troubleshooting of DCS logic; maintenance, replacement, and repair of DCS hardware; and installation and maintenance of third‑party software applications. A technical degree may be considered in lieu of comparable years of experience.
Preferred:
Process control engineering with a thorough understanding of control network communications, familiarity with NERC CIP standards, and maintenance and repair experience of emergency shutdown systems.
Required:
Knowledge and skill of instrumentation controls and devices; understanding of programmable logic controllers, emergency shutdown systems, distributive control systems, routable/non‑routable communications interfaces, and analytical devices; understanding of DCS, CAD drawings, electrical drawings, P&, ladder logic, and flow diagrams. Ability to work in an industrial environment. Good interpersonal oral and written communication skills.
