Wireless RAN 5G RF Engineer
Location – Tampa, FL
Duration – Contract
Responsibilities- Lead RF design, optimization, and deployment for 5G Radio Access Network (RAN)
- Perform detailed RF site planning and design for 5G LTE anchor bands using propagation tools (Atoll, Planet, etc.)
- Conduct link budget analysis and capacity planning to determine ideal site placement and hardware configurations
- Design key RF parameters including frequency plans, scrambling codes, PCI planning, and neighbor relations
- Develop RF solutions for indoor (DAS/Small Cells) and outdoor macro coverage
- Use simulation and modeling tools including MATLAB, Simulink, HFSS, and ADS
- Use drive test and data collection tools such as TEMS Investigation, Nemo Outdoor, PCTEL, and XCAL
- Process data using post-processing tools including TEMS Discovery, Actix, Windcatcher, and XCAP
- Apply strong hardware proficiency with spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and Site Master tools
- Deep understanding of 5G technologies including 5G (SA/NSA), mmWave, Sub-6 GHz, Massive MIMO, Beamforming, and O-RAN
- Write scripts and automation using Python and SQL
- Create KPI visualizations using Tableau or Power BI
- Monitor 5G/LTE KPIs such as RSRP, SINR, throughput, latency, and drop call rate to identify performance issues
- Implement RF optimization adjustments including antenna tilt, azimuth, and power tuning
- Optimize advanced 5G features such as Massive MIMO, beamforming, carrier aggregation, and dynamic spectrum sharing
- Analyze drive test data to detect coverage gaps, interference, and pilot pollution
- Work with field teams to ensure site builds match RF design specifications (antenna height, orientation, cabling)
- Troubleshoot complex L1/L3 issues using logs, call traces, and signaling analysis
- Manage interference mitigation including PIM and frequency interference resolution
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or related discipline
- 5+ years of hands‑on RF engineering experience focusing on RAN
- Direct experience with 5G or trials
- Strong understanding of 3
GPP Release 15/16/17 standards and 5G air interface protocols - Solid knowledge of LTE/VoLTE and 5G interoperability (EN‑DC)
- Experience with Open RAN and vRAN is a plus
- Vendor certifications (Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, Huawei) are preferred
- Familiarity with MEC and cloud‑native RAN concepts is a bonus
- Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret large RF datasets
- Excellent communication skills for explaining complex RF topics to non‑technical stakeholders
- Highly adaptable and eager to learn evolving telecom standards and tools
