SUMMARY/OBJECTIVES

The Universal Banker serves as a full‑service, single point of contact in the branch for South State customers’ financial needs. The position operates in dual capacity as a Teller and a Front‑Street Relationship (FSR) associate, providing exceptional customer service in both transactional and account‑management functions. The Universal Banker attracts, expands, and retains customer relationships and contributes to the financial growth of the bank.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS

  • Serves customers quickly, accurately, efficiently, and confidentially according to the South State Bank Service Standards.
  • Knows and understands the products and services offered by the Bank, including facts, features, benefits, regulations, price structure, and a clear definition of each service.
  • Able to identify customer needs and expectations by listening for clues; seeks opportunities to expand customer relationships through referrals as outlined in the goals for this position.
  • Presents a neat and professional personal appearance, in accordance with bank policy.
  • Knows and ensures compliance with all banking regulations, including Regulation CC and the Bank Secrecy Act.
  • Develops a strong understanding of customer‑facing technology and can discuss and enroll customers in self‑service options.
  • Teller Duties:
    • Processes transactions for savings, checking, and loan accounts.
    • Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
    • Assists in guiding and training new tellers.
    • Provides customers access to safe deposit boxes.
    • Cashes checks and processes savings withdrawals within assigned limits and in accordance with prescribed procedures.
    • Sells certified checks.
    • Balances transactions daily.
    • Services/balances ATM.
    • Utilizes the branch capture system.
    • Follows policies and procedures to complete transactions, minimize operational errors, and maintain proper workflow.
    • Follows the branch’s security and audit procedures and understands the function and operation of the security devices.
  • FSR Duties:
    • Opens new deposit accounts and handles other services such as stop payments, wire transfers, and maintenance functions within assigned limits.
    • Explains policies and procedures as necessary, keeping in mind most customers’ unfamiliarity with them.
    • Resolves customer problems and complaints with courtesy and discretion; directs customers with difficult problems to other sources for assistance. Considers problems and complaints as opportunities to satisfy the customer and promote additional services.
    • Is knowledgeable about financial services offered by the bank.
    • Shows sincere appreciation for each customer’s time and business; gives business card if not already given.
    • Follows the branch’s security and audit procedures and understands the function and operation of the security devices.
    • Assures branch records, reports, and other correspondence resulting from customer development attempts are correct, timely, and properly distributed.
UNIVERSAL BANKER FUNCTIONS
  • One year of teller or cash handling experience and six months of customer‑relationship building or sales experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the Teller II and basic FSR job functions.
  • Additional responsibilities may include vault responsibilities or back‑up vault responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Education, and Certification Requirements
  • Education
    :
    High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience
    :
    Cash handling, sales, customer service. Previous banking experience preferred.
  • Specific Knowledge
    :
    Good interpersonal skills, proficient computer skills, and ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS/CLASSES
  • The South State Way New Team Member Orientation
  • Teller Foundations
  • Banker Foundations
  • All assigned regulatory compliance training
  • Acknowledgement of all policies through Docu Sign as assigned
  • Additional training may be required depending on experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and stand and/or sit for long periods of time. Must be able to effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, reports, and cash denominations, and identify customers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is most likely in an open lobby area with an individual workstation. The position is located inside a cooled and heated facility with access to a break room or restroom during breaks.

TRAVEL

Travel may be required to attend meetings or training as needed.
