The Universal Banker serves as a full-service, single point of contact in the branch for South State customers’ financial needs. The position combines teller responsibilities with Financial Services Representative (FSR) duties to provide exceptional customer service in both transactional and account‑management contexts.
Summary / ObjectivesThe Universal Banker works to attract, expand, and retain customer relationships and contributes to the financial growth of the bank.
Essential Functions- Serve customers quickly, accurately, efficiently, and confidentially according to the South State Bank Service Standards.
- Understand and explain the products and services offered by the bank, including features, benefits, regulations, and price structure.
- Identify customer needs and expectations by listening for clues and seek opportunities to expand relationships by making referrals.
- Present a neat and professional personal appearance in accordance with bank policy.
- Ensure compliance with all banking regulations, including Regulation CC and the Bank Secrecy Act.
- Develop strong customer‑facing technology skills to enroll customers in self‑service options.
- Process transactions for savings, checking, and loan accounts.
- Maintain an orderly work area.
- Assist in guiding and training new tellers.
- Allow customers access to safe‑deposit boxes as required.
- Cash checks and process savings withdrawals within assigned limits.
- Sell certified checks.
- Balance transactions daily and service/balance ATM as needed.
- Utilize branch capture system.
- Follow policies and procedures to minimize operational errors and maintain proper workflow.
- Follow branch security and audit procedures and understand the function of security devices.
- Open new deposit accounts and explain the bank’s products and financial services.
- Handle services such as stop payments, wire transfers, and other maintenance functions within assigned limits.
- Explain policies and procedures to customers unfamiliar with them.
- Resolve customer problems and complaints with courtesy and discretion.
- Direct customers with difficult problems to appropriate sources for assistance.
- Use additional services to satisfy customers and promote additional products.
- Show sincere appreciation for each customer’s time and business; provide business cards when appropriate.
- Follow branch security and audit procedures and understand security device functions.
- Ensure branch records, reports, and correspondence resulting from customer development attempts are accurate, timely, and properly distributed.
- One year of teller or cash‑handling experience and at least six months of customer‑relationship or sales experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in Teller II and basic FSR job functions.
- Optional additional responsibilities may include vault responsibilities or back‑up vault duties.
- Any other duties as assigned.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience:
cash handling, sales, and customer service; prior banking experience preferred. - Specific knowledge: strong interpersonal skills, computer skills, proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.

- Additional training may be required depending on experience.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods.
- Must be able to effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, reports, and cash denominations.
The position is located in an open lobby area with an individual workstation. The facility is climate‑controlled, and employees have access to a break room and restroom during breaks.
TravelTravel may be required for meetings or training as needed.
