Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) and is set by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Applicants pending the completion of certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected – but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements- All applicants must meet the following basic qualifications

In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) – no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English - Education:
A post‑master’s certificate or master’s or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner from a school of professional nursing - (Transcripts Required) The education must be accredited by one of the following accrediting organizations at the time the program was completed:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) – note:
The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission/NLNAC changed its name to ACEN in May 2013 – or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) – an accrediting arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) - In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing programs – the nurse practitioner degree equivalency must be validated through an agency‑recognized degree equivalency evaluation agency – such as the International Consultants of Delaware (ICD)
- Applicants with equivalent Nurse Practitioner masters or doctorate level degrees who possess current, full, active and unrestricted registration and certification will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment
- License:
Active – current – full and unrestricted APN license to practice as an NP in a state, territory or commonwealth of the United States – or in the District of Columbia - (Copy of NP License Required) Nurse Practitioner Board Certification:
Must possess and maintain full and current board certification as an NP in Adult or Family, Adult–Family or Adult Gerontology Primary Care - The certification must be in one of the following certifying bodies: (1) The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC); (2) The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB); (3) other nationally recognized certifying body in the area in which the Nurse Practitioner is academically prepared

NOTE:
Grandfathering Provision – all persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and an APN (NP) assignment that are also performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (01/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification - Preferred Experience and Certifications – these preferences are highly desired but are not required: 3 years experience in Home Care – or any other geriatric setting preferred (nursing home – senior primary care). In addition to the basic qualification requirements, the grade level of an NP is based on a combination of education and experience - Nurse Practitioner II:
Scope – Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others - Education and Experience Requirement – None beyond the basic requirements
