Airfield Technician I

Under the general direction of an Airfield Supervisor, the Airfield Technician I performs technical work related to the operations and duties of leading and assigning tasks in safety, maintenance, and security within the airport environment. This role involves various tasks, including the maintenance of airfield paint markings, pavement condition indexing, and field conditioning, as well as ensuring security requirements are met.

The Airfield Technician I performs daily grounds cleanup, manages trash and debris removal (excluding hazardous materials), conducts pavement inspections, and conducts repairs on asphalt, concrete, and fencing. This position requires flexibility to work rotating shifts, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays, to meet the demands of our 24/7 operations. Requires availability for emergency call-in.

Compensation: $22.82

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts daily cleanup of grounds, roadways, and AOA areas, including the removal of trash and debris from airport property.
  • Performs airfield grounds maintenance tasks, including pavement inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs to ensure compliance with FAA FAR Part 139.
  • Maintains proper grades at pavement shoulders, NAVAIDs, manholes, drop inlets, and other airfield appurtenances.
  • Manages and maintains stormwater drainage components, including drop inlets, outfalls, riprap ditches, and detention ponds, to prevent ponding and ensure proper drainage.
  • Conducts maintenance of painted lines and markings on runways, taxiways, aprons, parking lots, garages, and roadways.
  • Cuts grass in and around airfield areas, including edge lights, signs, light lanes, and fence lines.
  • Clears brush on hillsides, drainage ditches, and fence lines to maintain visibility and safety.
  • Performs preparation work and painting of airfield markings to ensure compliance with FAA standards.
  • Operates power equipment such as sweeper trucks, painting equipment, mowing equipment, air compressors, and front-end loaders.
  • Maintains perimeter fencing and gates, performing right-of-way maintenance, including mowing, trimming, and herbicide application.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations while performing tasks to ensure a safe working environment, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and reporting potential hazards.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required as an essential function of this position.

Required for all HCAA jobs:
In the event of an emergency or disaster that impacts the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority (HCAA), an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department or the HCAA Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Such assignments may be before, during, or after the emergency/disaster. Complies with all HCAA Policies, Procedures, and Standards.

Qualifications (Education, Experience, Licenses & Certifications):

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year experience in working with heavy equipment, general construction, maintenance, or related field. Or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Obtain and maintain Ramp and Movement Area (MAT) driving privileges.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver License.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of maintenance practices for airfield facilities, including pavement condition indexing and field conditioning techniques.
  • Knowledge of common trade tasks, procedures, techniques, and the tools required for efficient airfield maintenance operations.
