This is manual and semi-skilled transportation construction, maintenance and repair work. Bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing various manual and semi-skilled tasks of average difficulty in transportation construction, maintenance, and repair at the Transportation and Stormwater Services Department. Employees operate power tools and small equipment. Under guidance, the employee exercises some initiative and independent judgment in performing assigned tasks. Employees are required to perform tasks of a hazardous nature.

Some positions may require the employee to work various shifts to include nights, weekends and holidays. Employees may only remain in this class for up to one year while progressing toward the mandatory requirement to become a Transportation Operations Technician I. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through observations and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Performs manual and semi-skilled laboring tasks related to transportation construction, repair, and maintenance; cuts out streets and driveways; manually excavates, backfills and compacts excavated areas to facilitate repair; asphalt paving and patching repair; core drilling, mixing concrete and installing riser rings and raised pavement markers.

Reads and interprets street maps; properly interprets gauge and meter readings and locates utilities on the job; performs simple measurements.

Completes attendance records and timesheets (KRONOS); prepare and maintain records of work accomplishments.

Place, install and maintain traffic control devices (signs, barricades, cones, barrels, etc.) with guidance; repair existing traffic sign locations as a result of such acts as accidents, vandalism, or weather.

Receive, load and transport materials and equipment to and from job site.

Demonstrate proper use of hand signals for traffic and equipment operations.

Maintain vehicle inspection report; responsible for general safety and cleanliness of work area.

Operates the following: radio, cell phone; paint machine; magnetic utility locators; light to medium automotive work vehicles; kettle; hand and power tools; small equipment such as street grinders, tampers, saws; fire hydrants; air compressors and generators.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Some knowledge of
: proper safety practices; measurements; proper use of hand signals for traffic and equipment operations; paving and patching procedures; transportation construction procedures; and communications equipment.

Ability to
: read and write; understand and follow oral and written instructions; read and interpret street maps; drive and work safely; perform work requiring physical strength; perform simple measurements; operate small equipment, hand and power tools; properly interpret gauge and meters; work in a team atmosphere; be a self-starter, try new ideas and acquire skill flexibility; communicate effectively; deal with and resolve conflict within a team;

be courteous under pressure; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and general public.

Skill in
: the use and care of hand and power tools; the use of small equipment; gauge and meter reading and driving trucks as identified with the CDL “B”.

Physical Requirements

Mostly outside work, able to lift up to 50 lbs., stand, works outdoors very frequently. May require some use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school, technical or vocational school or, if already employed at Mobility must meet Trainee level of the skills matrix.

Licenses or Certifications

Valid Florida Commercial driver’s license, Class "A or B with Tanker endorsement"

Must successfully complete City MOT Training Class and the City Defensive Driving class.
