Job Description

POSITION: Teacher

REPORTS TO: Principal

SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Management of Instructional Time
    – The teacher keeps materials ready, starts class quickly, and maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Management of Student Behavior
    – The teacher establishes rules and procedures for routine matters, verbal participation, movement, and monitoring student behavior, stopping inappropriate behavior promptly while upholding student dignity.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Instructional Presentation
    – The teacher begins with a review, introduces objectives, delivers content clearly, uses examples, assigns tasks, asks appropriate questions, maintains brisk pacing, handles transitions efficiently, and summarizes key points.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
    – The teacher sets clear standards, circulates during class work, checks performance, uses oral and written products, and poses clear questions.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Instructional Feedback
    – The teacher provides prompt and sustaining feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work, affirms correct responses, and probes incorrect ones.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Facilitating Instruction
    – The teacher develops plans aligned with curricular goals, uses diagnostic data, maintains records, and utilizes resources to support instruction.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Interacting Within the Educational Environment
    – The teacher treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community members.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
    – The teacher performs non‑instructional duties as assigned, follows laws and policies, and demonstrates professional growth.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS – Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Degree in education or a related field qualifying for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Able to use various tools and endure light work for extended periods.

    Ability to compare and judge data and characteristics.

    Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly.
  • Manual Dexterity:
    Ability to handle items and tools with minimal coordination.
  • Color Discrimination:
    Ability to differentiate colors.
  • Interpersonal Temperament:
    Ability to manage stress and emergency situations.
  • Physical Communication:
    Ability to talk, hear, and use phone.
