Position Summary:
The Sr. Commercial Lending Underwriter reviews and underwrites commercial loan opportunities while supporting the expansion and retention of existing credit relationships. This role includes structuring and underwriting new loans, modifications, and renewals, and performing annual relationship reviews on loans ranging from $50,000 to over $40 million. The position ensures continuous credit policy and regulatory compliance, preparation of appropriate credit actions, and collaboration across internal and external teams.
A strong knowledge of commercial lending, financial analysis, and credit union products is essential.
Loan Evaluation & Structuring
- Lead the underwriting process for Commercial and SBA loans, conducting comprehensive due diligence on prospective and existing business members across all commercial product lines.
- Prepare credit presentations for loans ranging in size from $50,000 to over $40 million while adhering to applicable NCUA regulations, SBA SOP, and credit union policies.
- Structure new loans, modifications, and renewal requests along with facilitating credit approval.
- Ensure complete and accurate documentation of all credit actions.
- Analyze key risk factors, trends, and ratios against benchmarks and industry norms.
- Manage and maintain reports tied to essential portfolio management needs in order to perform timely annual reviews, renewals, modifications, covenant monitoring, and watch list assessments.
- Aid in the maintenance and updating of the Watch List, OREO, and Delinquency reports, including borrower status changes.
- Initiate timely risk rating changes as needed.
- Collaborate with the AVP of Commercial Lending on credit and risk matters.
- Meet with auditors and examiners as required to review credit files and CAMs and assist in resolving audit points.
- Provide training and mentorship to new Commercial Lending Underwriters, foster a culture of excellence, and continuous learning.
- Partner with Commercial Relationship Managers (CRMs), underwriters, portfolio management, closing team, and product teams to support member needs.
- Identify and propose process improvements within scope of work.
- Review credit policy and ensure adherence to lending and concentration limits.
- Identify cross-sell opportunities and recommend relevant products and services to business members and their affiliates, collaborating with CRMs to ensure effective follow-up.
- Maintain loan authority up to $500,000 and uphold all ethical standards of the credit union.
- Participate in required training, including BSA and Privacy Act Compliance.
- Represent the credit union with professionalism and courtesy in all interactions.
- Support and partner with leadership on initiatives that position the credit union as a top employer through leadership, integrity, and service excellence.
- Take initiative to perform other essential functions as needed to support the team.
- Travel, on occasion, may be required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Training in NAGGL SBA Underwriting.
- 5 years underwriting experience across commercial product lines to include C&I, commercial real estate (owner and non-owner occupied), SBA (7a & 504), lines of credit.
- Experience in loan participations, syndications, and yacht lending preferred.
- Strong knowledge of commercial lending, financial analysis, and credit union products
- Proficient in evaluating complex financial statements, trends, and risk indicators.
- Experience with cash flow, comparable company, and precedent transaction analysis.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite with preferred experience utilizing a Commercial LOS for underwriting and financial analysis tools.
- Strong business writing and communication skills.
- Ability to synthesize complex data into clear, actionable credit assessments.
- Formal credit training or equivalent experience required.
