Position Summary
This position is responsible for executing compound development projects as a part of the Technology R&D Materials organization. The position is located in Taunton, Massachusetts.
Nature & ScopeReporting to the Specialty Compound Manager, this position is responsible for leading compound development projects and is accountable for communication and delivery of results to the broader Technology team. The R&D Materials Senior Engineer will apply a systematic and designed experimental approach to develop new polymeric compounds and evaluate changes in material performance prior to commercial scale‑up in our manufacturing plants.
SpecificJob Duties
- Lead or support cross‑functional project teams in production‑scale compounding and prototype processing trials within the applicable Prysmian manufacturing facility associated with compound development projects.
- Work with a wide range of rubber (CSPE, CPE, Neoprene) and plastic systems to drive cost reduction and enhanced performance from bench scale to commercialization.
- Develop material specification and quality test programs to ensure robust compound performance.
- Investigate and apply new polymer and additive technologies from a variety of suppliers.
- Leverage polymers and materials experience to identify and execute projects which improve compound/cable sustainability and carbon footprint.
- Work to tight deadlines as well as contributing to longer term R&D projects.
- Coordinate laboratory experiments through Technical Service Requests.
- Supervise daily activities of the R&D Materials laboratory technician in order to complete project tasks.
- Create and modify compound specifications (including relevant raw material codes) to support the production of new or existing compounds.
- Prepare informative and accurate technical reports.
- Update and maintain records/database on compound changes or modifications.
- Ability to work as an individual or within a team.
- Sound technical skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to handle multiple work assignments.
- Excellent communication skills at all levels of the organization.
- Motivated, self‑starter.
Qualified candidates will possess a minimum of a B.S. degree in Chemical or Polymer Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline. An advanced degree is preferred.
ExperienceQualified candidates for the R&D Materials Senior Engineer position should possess at least 3 years of experience with demonstrated expertise as follows:
- Hands‑on experience with polymer compound development and processing.
- Experience with specialty rubber (CSPE, CPE, Neoprene) and plastic formulations, as well as different flame retardant technologies.
- Good understanding of structure–property relationships of polymer blends.
- Proven track record of delivering projects and communicating results.
- Previous experience with polymer compound development in the wire & cable industry.
Base salary: $95,000 – $143,000.
