Overview
The Nursing (RN) Clinical Manager is responsible for management and oversight of their assigned operational unit(s). The RN Clinical Manager translates and supports the goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the Nursing Department and delivery of nursing services on one or more designated patient care units. The role has delegated authority to make decisions in patient care delivery, human resource management, and budgetary development and compliance.

Has 24-hour responsibility for one or more patient units, directing and coordinating resources for the delivery of care to patients and their families. Supports a trauma-informed, least restrictive environment that is free from coercion, retaliation, or discipline. Fosters a workplace culture of safety, including team approaches to patient safety, an atmosphere that promotes reporting of safety incidents, and a focus on staffing, communication, and prevention of adverse outcomes.
Monitors and evaluates the assignment of patient care based on patient needs and acuity level. Sets strategic vision for the area according to standards of excellence, with Magnet standards as the foundation for practice. Designs strategies to support organizational goals. Sets unit-based goals and objectives consistent with the overall departmental and institutional perspective. Monitors progress toward goal attainment. Schedules regular staff meetings to provide employees with day-to-day operational information, quality and policy updates, unit information, and organizational news from hospital and Brown University Health leadership.
Responsible for developing employees to their fullest work potential by identifying educational opportunities and unit-based growth experiences and by monitoring, intervening and interacting when appropriate after assessing and evaluating nursing care. Responsible for knowing the requirements of accrediting and regulatory agencies and ensuring compliance on the Nursing Unit. Collaborates with Environmental Safety Program Manager, Safety Officer, and hospital quality and safety committees to ensure regulatory and environmental safety standards are met.
Oversees unit-level Quality Improvement activities in line with the Hospital s Quality Improvement Plan. Participates on hospital, departmental, and system-wide committees and teams as deemed necessary by the department director. Evaluates the performance of staff, provides developmental feedback, and conducts ongoing assessment and annual reviews. Conducts performance discussions and reviews goals with employees at appropriate intervals. Supports ongoing Nursing, Educational, and Research programs.
Works collaboratively with staff, peers, and Clinical Nurse Specialists and Clinical Nurse Leaders to continually update standards of care and meet educational needs. Participates in orientation of new staff with Staff Development Professionals, monitoring and evaluating performance. Responsible for developing and monitoring capital and operating budgets for the assigned patient area, including completing monthly variance reports and adjusting operations accordingly.
Manages unit budget, monitors expenses, evaluates variances, and takes action to align with budget. Utilizes patient classification information to identify budget changes needed for patient care. Maintains quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards in accordance with hospital policies and objectives. Conducts applicant interviews and makes hiring recommendations in collaboration with Human Resources. Assesses and responds to internal and external customer requirements.
For clinical managers with oversight over staff requiring Safety Care Level 1 certification, obtains initial certification and annual re-certification in full Safety Care Level 1 training.
