Registered Nurse III (Charge Nurse) – Overnight Shift (260004YC)
Taunton State Hospital is seeking a candidate for the Nursing Services department to function as a Charge Nurse (Registered Nurse III), providing nursing care, custody, and instruction to adult psychiatric patients on locked units. The candidate will develop nursing plans using a Person‑Centered Approach within the Recovery Model and assess the health care needs of patients and their families. The role includes participation in admissions, discharges, and related duties.
Work Hours and Shift: 40 hours per week, 3rd shift from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Days off:
Week 1 – Monday/Saturday, Week 2 – Sunday/Thursday.
Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.
Responsibilities- Provides nursing care, custody and instruction to adult psychiatric patients on locked units.
- Acts as Charge Nurse, delegating and overseeing completion of tasks by nursing staff for the shift.
- Ensures optimum quality care by serving as patient advocate and protecting confidentiality and patient rights.
- Applies Patient‑Centered Care within the Recovery Model.
- Identifies and addresses patient needs through assessments, interventions and care following professional standards.
- Provides a role model for Recovery and Trauma‑informed care.
- Delivers high‑quality psychiatric care tailored to the age‑specific population served.
- Knowledge of nursing principles, terminology and standard abbreviations.
- Knowledge of nursing services for special client groups and custodial care issues.
- Knowledge of emergency medical procedures (CPR, tourniquets).
- Knowledge of monitoring equipment (telemetry, ECG, etc.).
- Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and nursing policies, procedures, methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of physiological, psychological and emotional growth and development principles.
- Knowledge of drug characteristics for diagnosing, treating and controlling disorders.
- Ability to read and interpret physician orders and treatment plans.
- Ability to participate in a multidisciplinary health‑care team.
- Knowledge of supervision principles and practices, including work planning, training needs, and disciplinary action.
- Multilingual or bilingual fluency given the population served.
Taunton State Hospital (TSH), operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH), is a 62‑bed inpatient facility providing continuing care to adults with major mental illnesses. TSH integrates the Principles of Recovery and rehabilitation philosophy into its treatment model, working closely with the Southeast Area to facilitate patient discharge back to the community.
