Description

The Recovery from Addictions Program (RAP) operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH) seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Trades Worker. The successful candidate is assigned varied tasks to assist trades workers in the performance of their duties in a variety of trades (e.g., plumbing, electrical, painting, locksmith, garage, and carpentry, etc.); perform routine trade-related maintenance and repair;

maintain machinery, equipment and tools; may assist in transportation of personnel and patients, install glass; install and replace floor covering; and perform related work as required.

Note:
This position is 40 hours per week. The incumbent will work on the day shift from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Days off are Sunday and Saturday. This position is on call during inclement weather events.

Responsibilities
  • Installs, repairs, replaces, and makes adjustment to building hardware in a workman like manner to provide a safe and secure environment.
  • Replaces glazing materials in windows and doors, according to established practice to provide a safe and secure environment.
  • Uses and maintains hand tools, gasoline, electric or pneumatically powered tools and equipment used in the trades, according to established procedure in the safe completion of the job at hand.
  • Works independently on minor construction or repair work in any trade, according to established procedure in the safe completion of the job at hand.
  • Works with journeymen of any trade, by doing the heavier and less skilled work so as to assist the tradesman in the completion of major construction and repair projects.
  • Operates state vehicles in a safe manner to provide transportation of personnel and materials to the work site.
  • Sets up ladders, staging and scaffolding equipment to provide a safe platform to work from.
  • Erects minor concrete forms, according to standard practice for the placement of wet concrete.
  • Makes mortar, concrete, and plaster mixes, according to standard practice for use of a mason in the completion of his work.
  • Cleans tools, equipment, and sweep work site, according to established procedure to maintain equipment and provide for a safe environment.
  • Installs ceiling and floor tiles, according to established procedure to replace broken, loose, and/or broken tiles.
  • Constructs and installs minor woodwork projects, according to established practice to provide additional storage, shelving, and appurtenances in various hospital areas.
  • Assist with maintaining grounds around buildings by cutting grass, raking, leaves, weeding and planting flowerbeds or garden, putting gravel and dumping and smoothing hot top mix.

Assist with outside duties such as washing windows, sweeping walks, shoveling snow, plowing snow, salting walkways roads and picking up debris around building.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of a trade school diploma or certificate of completion in one of the trades, or in industrial maintenance or have a minimum of two years’ experience working in construction.
  • Working knowledge of simple construction and repair procedures, and the use of tools and equipment used in the trades.
  • Ability to perform manual labor including heavy lifting.
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders, staging’s, and scaffolding at some distance from the ground.
  • Ability to make common mortar, plaster, and concrete mixes when necessary.
  • Ability to install and repair curtain, shades, and drapery fixtures.
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency
License and/or Certification Requirements

Must possess valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operators License (Class

D) or equivalent in the state in which you reside.
