Job Title:
HVAC/Mechanical & Piping Systems Estimator
- Commercial & Industrial
Company Name:
Engineered Comfort Solutions
Pay Range: $75,000 - $120,000 annually (based on experience)
Industry: HVAC/MEP/Power Plant Generation/Industrial Power Plant (Commercial, Industrial)
Office
Location:
Taylor, MI
Project Regions:
Southeast Michigan & Midwest
Job Overview:
Engineered Comfort Systems is not hiring an estimator to preserve old habits or simply produce bid numbers. Producing estimates is part of the role; owning the continued improvement of accuracy, speed, margin protection, and handoff quality is the standard. You will turn complex documents, incomplete information, vendor input, and deadlines into clear, competitive, profitable decisions that influence which projects ECS pursues, wins, and delivers.
Why ECS:
For more than 30 years, Engineered Comfort Systems has supported complex commercial and industrial environments with mechanical systems, HVAC service, automation controls, responsive communication, and disciplined documentation. ECS is building its next stage of growth by adding people who want responsibility, development, and the chance to influence what comes next. Learn more at
What You Will Own:
- Analyze plans, specifications, addenda, and scope requirements for commercial and industrial HVAC/Mechanical & Piping Systems Estimator, power generation, and related building-trade projects.
- Build accurate material takeoffs and labor estimates for sheet metal, piping, controls, equipment, and applicable subcontracted scopes.
- Solicit, level, and challenge vendor and subcontractor quotes instead of simply collecting numbers.
- Surface scope gaps, exclusions, schedule risks, and assumptions early - before they become margin problems.
- Develop value-engineering options and alternate solutions that protect performance and customer value.
- Prepare disciplined bid packages, lead or support bid reviews, and create clean handoffs for project management and operations.
- Continuously improve historical cost intelligence, benchmark pricing, bid results, and the visibility of the opportunity pipeline.
- Use Procore, Excel, and related estimating tools to improve accuracy, speed, consistency, and accountability.
What Winning Looks Like:
- Bids are complete, on time, and supported by assumptions that another leader can understand and defend.
- Risks are identified before submission, not explained after award.
- Project handoffs are clean enough that operations knows what was sold, priced, excluded, and promised.
- Cost history, templates, and estimating discipline improve because you capture results and act on lessons learned.
- You help increase capacity without lowering the standard for accuracy, quality, or profitability.
You Will Thrive Here If:
- You are financially motivated and understand that profitable work creates opportunity for the customer, the company, and the team.
- You know your math, verify details, and take personal accountability for the number you put forward.
- You are disciplined, consistent, persistent, and willing to follow a proven estimating process.
- You communicate gaps and bad news early. You do not hide behind a spreadsheet.
- You want continued development, bigger challenges, and increasing responsibility based on performance.
This will not fit:
If you need constant chasing to close loops, treat deadlines as suggestions, or hand risk to the next department, this is not your role.
Required Experience:
- 3-5 years of HVAC/Mechanical & Piping Systems Estimator or mechanical estimating experience.
- Strong understanding of HVAC/Mechanical & Piping Systems, ductwork, hydronics, air handling, controls, and construction documents.
- Ability to interpret complex blueprints, specifications, and scope requirements.
- Proficiency with estimating software, Procore or similar platforms, and Microsoft Excel.
- Working knowledge of local mechanical codes, ASHRAE standards, and SMACNA guidelines.
- Strong written and verbal communication, organization, time management, and attention to…
