Position: HMC/VMC CNC Setup Specialist (Makino)

Role Overview

Your day begins at the machining cell. You verify the job traveler, pull the correct fixtures and attachments, and prepare the HMC/VMC—often a Makino to run the next batch. You choose the right cutting tools and inserts, load the part program, and confirm that machine offsets are set for a clean first article.

Day in the Life
  • Set up and operate HMC and VMC CNC machines, installing fixtures, attachments, tooling, and part programs to produce conforming parts (Makino HMC experience preferred).
  • Interpret engineering drawings and GD&T, and understand G-code to validate and refine programs as needed.
  • Monitor the run: use calipers, micrometers, and variable/attribute gauges to check features; review CMM reports and make real-time offset, feed, and speed adjustments.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot machine, robot interface, and process issues to keep production flowing.
  • Adjust robotic load/unload parameters to stabilize cycle times and part handling.
  • Keep precise records of setups, tool changes, offsets, and in-process adjustments for repeatability and traceability across the shop floor.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and engineers to identify risks, mitigate issues, and consistently achieve production standards and goals.
  • Drive corrective actions for process, quality, and safety concerns; elevate promptly when needed.
  • Coach and train operators on machine setup and operation best practices.
  • Spot opportunities to improve the machining process and implement them.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area in line with 5S; follow MIOSHA standards and company safety policies (written and verbal).
  • Ensure all work follows the Quality Management System (IATF 16949) and other internal procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What You Bring
  • 5+ years setting up 3-, 4-, and 5-axis HMC CNC machines;
    Makino setup knowledge preferred.
  • Hands-on CNC operation and G-code programming experience.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software (preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, speeds/feeds, and cutting speed terminology.
  • Blueprint reading skills and proficiency with precision measurement tools.
  • Proven capability with machine setup, tooling and fixturing, and CNC offset adjustments.
  • Solid math and geometry skills for part dimensions; general computer literacy.
  • Detail-oriented with a drive for accuracy and zero defects; able to investigate and analyze non-conformances.
  • Independent, procedure-focused work style with strong problem-solving and mechanical aptitude.
  • Team-oriented communicator who performs well under pressure, treats others with respect, takes accountability, and follows through.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Familiar with Makino, FANUC, Mori Seiki, and similar CNC controls.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Flexible with work hours; able to navigate unexpected challenges and quickly find solutions.
