Job Summary
Responsible for maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all individuals on hospital property. Under general supervision and following standardized policies and procedures, this role is responsible for maintaining a secure and orderly environment and protecting the grounds and off‑site buildings for Corewell Health, including the safety of all employees, visitors, and patients. The position may require Armed Security Officers to obtain Public Act 330 certification and to arrest for misdemeanors offenses, as well as to complete the Michigan State Police PA 330 certification requirements.
EssentialFunctions
- Patrol campus on foot and in vehicle (or on bike as assigned), offering assistance such as unlocking doors and providing motor assistance outside, and remaining vigilant for suspicious activities and security violations.
- Accept and perform various duties at assigned post, assisting patients, visitors, and employees, and enforcing hospital rules, regulations, and policies as appropriate.
- Assist in the Security Operations Center by monitoring phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic.
- Provide statistical safety and security reporting to internal customers and senior management regarding performance, improvement strategies, initiatives, and compliance issues.
- Complete assigned or self‑generated reports or logs daily on all activities, irregularities, and investigations; log all calls and lost articles, and send reports to managers and executives.
- Investigate suspected crimes on the hospital grounds and off‑site locations, prepare reports, evaluate pertinent data, and cooperate with law enforcement on complaints.
- Provide security escorts and other assistance to employees, visitors, or patients as conditions warrant for safety or as assigned.
- Respond to routine inquiries and direct visitors to appropriate areas, preventing unauthorized access to restricted areas.
- Use proactive non‑violent verbal de‑escalation skills to neutralize volatile situations involving patients, staff, and visitors without escalating the event into a violent incident.
- Assist nursing staff with physical management/ restraint of patients as ordered by a physician.
- In dealing with non‑patient aggressors, use defensive tactics and the approved MCOLES force continuum when necessary to safeguard lives and well‑being of staff, patients, and visitors.
- Possess, carry, and utilize Conduit Electronic Weapons, tasers, and other weapons in conjunction with the MCOLES force continuum as determined by Corewell Health policy.
- Provide CPR and first aid in the event of a medical emergency on the grounds or in public areas until trained medical staff can arrive, following EMTALA law.
- Assist Emergency Department staff with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures, including donning and doffing of PAPR and Tyvek suits and maintaining security and order in the decontamination area.
- Report and respond to incidents of fire and/or safety hazards.
- Inspect firefighting apparatus and extinguishers; assist with regularly scheduled fire, disaster, and other emergency drills.
- Release patient remains to appropriate agencies or funeral homes.
At locations where PA 330 is in place, all the above essential duties plus:
- Diligently and appropriately utilize Police Authority to arrest for both felonies and misdemeanors on Corewell Health property under Michigan Law (PA 330).
- Diligently and appropriately utilize citation / ticket writing and ordinance enforcement authority under Michigan Law (PA 330) and local city ordinances.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of two to three years of law‑enforcement related work experience as a police officer, hospital security, corporate security, reserve police officer, or military police.
- The ability to take charge and direct others in emergencies or other dangerous incidents.
- Electronic Control Devices (ECD) use – requires approval and authorization by the Director and a current Carry Pistol License (CPL) and successful completion of a specialized Taser Training Course.
- LI‑Driver's License – State of Michigan.
- CRT‑Basic Life Support (BLS) – AHA (American Heart Association), 90 days.
