The COS Material Handler Lead helps management ensure smooth, safe, and efficient operations in assigned area(s) (i.e., shipping, receiving, warranty, etc.) within the warehouse. The Lead has proven overall knowledge of our warehouse procedures, equipment, and systems across all areas of the warehouse through technical and on-the-job training and experience. Performs all work of a Material Handler at highest level of competency and efficiency, and assists management with key areas across the operations.
Serves as Lead for other Material Handlers by training and providing support, guidance, and subject matter expertise.
- Leads team members in assigned area(s), implementing processes and procedures; ensures smooth, safe, and efficient operations in that area; and applies subject matter expertise to solve problems.
- Operates power equipment (i.e. electric pallet, walkie rider, sit-down forklift) in a safe and efficient manner to locate, put away, stack, and move checked-in products to correct storage locations on a daily basis. This includes stocking, filling bin boxes, facing cartons, checking for product mixing, and rotating product where needed; monitoring stock on shelves or bins; replenishing stock from reserves; maintaining control of products in reserve stock area or will call area.
- Receives product by unloading trucks using forklift, pallet jack, electric pallet jack, or by hand.
- Ensures shipments received are in good condition and accurate by: inspecting freight for damage and signing freight bills; verifying quantity ordered versus quantity received; checking all shipments against packing lists; and completing necessary paperwork for reimbursements or discrepancies.
- Ensures all required products have verified bar code labels and readable Johnstone stock numbers by scanning products, printing labels, resolving labeling discrepancies, and completing necessary paperwork.
- Fills orders by picking products, packing items into cartons, and stacking them in a manner that minimizes shipping damage, entering items into scan gun, and completing necessary paperwork.
- Documents the shipment of hazardous materials by labeling cartons correctly and completing necessary paperwork.
- Prepares orders by: preparing trucks for shipments; palletizing and wrapping orders; loading pallets and pieces into trucks; placing packing list in last skid; and completing necessary paperwork.
- Maintains current accuracy and efficiency standards and follows standard operating procedures.
- Coordinates as needed with counter staff to encourage efficient flow of products from back-of-house to front-of-house and vice versa.
- Participates in and may lead inventory cycle counts and other related projects in current location and/or the region as assigned.
- May travel to other branches to provide training or support as assigned.
- Follows and models processes and procedures, answers questions, and provides general guidance for other Material Handlers.
- Trains new employees on Material Handler’s duties, processes, procedures, and safety protocols.
- Leads implementation of procedural changes and educates team members on such changes.
- Assists in the maintenance and upkeep of all warehouse machinery and equipment.
- Maintains a safe work environment by working in a safe manner, following safety rules, and maintaining a clean work area. Promptly reports any safety or maintenance concerns to supervisors.
- Always wears protective equipment according to company policies and procedures. Accesses Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) as needed and when appropriate.
- Maintains required hazardous materials, forklift, and other internal and external certifications as needed.
- Maintains and models professional communications when interacting with customers and coworkers. Treats all customers and coworkers with a helpful and courteous attitude.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
