Overview

CAREER ADVISOR I – The Career Advisor I (CA) provides career counseling and coaching to help customers enhance their training and professional skillset to obtain employment in their desired field. The CA expands job seeker employment opportunities through career exploration strategies and supports the mission of C2 GPS.

Responsibilities
  • Provides comprehensive career assessments (including for professional level customers and those with substantial barriers to employment) to determine occupational interests and aptitude; identifies training and development needs, current level of vocational skills, employment history, interests, and abilities to assist jobseekers in understanding career options based on long-term goals.
  • Influences and empowers job seekers to find employment; recommends workforce programs and services at local, state, and federal levels; conducts intake processes and completes program eligibility for grant-funded programs.
  • Guides job seekers through the career development and exploration process; helps determine occupational interests and abilities using a wide range of workforce tools, such as aptitude assessments, interviewing techniques, resume writing, and other career planning services.
  • Provides labor market information on opportunities, qualifications, and expected pay to help customers develop actionable career goals.
  • Educates participants on job search skills and industry trends; uses electronic and other resources to aid in career and job search decisions; assists with resume development, mock interviews, and job search strategies.
  • Provides information regarding training opportunities and educational vendors; discusses financial aid and scholarships available to jobseekers.
  • Refer participants to training opportunities (occupational skills training, work-based training, apprenticeship) for employability skills and professional development.
  • Prepares and submits ITAs, work-based training requests, and supportive service requests in a timely manner.
  • Continuously evaluates customers’ needs and provides referrals to internal or external support services to overcome challenges affecting academic or career success.
  • Maintains ongoing contact with customers to provide career services, case management, and regular progress monitoring to ensure achievement of academic or occupational goals.
  • Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with internal teams, the public, and external partners.
  • Partners with the business solutions unit within career centers to identify employment opportunities for participants.
  • Screens and refers participants to job opportunities they are qualified for, focusing on training-related development.
  • Actively seeks ways to improve workforce services to meet labor market needs.
  • Manages customer information and enters required data into the management information system in a timely manner (service codes and case notes).
  • Performs other duties as assigned and fulfills responsibilities as required.
  • Ensures case files meet or exceed all local, state, and federal quality assurance requirements.
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associates or Undergraduate degree preferred.
  • Previous related workforce experience preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and proof of insurance required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of workforce development, economic development, and project management.
  • Knowledge of effective conflict resolution practices, or individual case management and career counseling.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, technology, and computer skills.
  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work with diverse customers with unique needs and communication styles.
  • Ability to handle stressful or challenging situations with difficult customers; sensitive to customer needs and feelings; demonstrates concern for others.
  • Excellent case management, analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with management, coworkers, Board staff, and the public.
