The successful candidate will prepare and teach multiple college-level biology courses for majors which may include BIOL 1010, BIOL 1610, BIOL 1615, BIOL
2060, BIOL 2320 and/ or BIOL 2325 as well as other lecture and lab courses as assigned.
The Department of Biology at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) seeks to hire a 9-month temporary instructor who is a student-centered and collaborative faculty member, skilled in the scholarship of teaching and learning, who embraces the distinct mission of community colleges and the needs of students at open-access institutions. The successful candidate will join an active and innovative department whose members engage in evidence-based instructional practices.
Faculty members may be assigned to any SLCC location and may be assigned alternative work schedules (e.g. evenings). All faculty are expected to teach classes in accordance with established guidelines (e.g. Faculty Handbook) and policies (e.g. Academic Freedom, Professional Responsibility and Tenure Policy -#C4S01.01), to conduct other instructional activities including curriculum development, to participate in professional activities such as scholarly study and/or research, and college and departmental service such as curriculum development projects.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities Responsibilities & Duties- Effectively prepare and teach college biology courses, associated labs, and other courses as assigned.
- Maintain regularly scheduled office/consultation hours.
- Advise students on program and/or course requirements.
- Assess and maintain student performance records.
- Participate in program and course curriculum development, revisions, and assessment working with both course leads and department colleagues.
- Pursue professional development activities and demonstrate a depth of understanding in the field as well as the ability to teach Biology courses.
- Serve on Department, School, and/or College committees as needed to assist in policy development, curriculum development, textbook reviews, procedures, or other matters that benefit the Department, School or College.
- Maintain a supportive attitude toward work, students, colleagues and administration. Demonstrate and support professional commitment to Department and College mission and Values.
- Attend New Faculty Orientation sessions as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Responsibilities
- Effectively prepare and teach a minimum of 15 Instructional Units that will provide students a rich and engaging educational experience.
- Teach courses consistent with institutional and department standards, appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO), and catalog description.
- Use the college-approved syllabus platform to inform students of course policies and learning outcomes.
- Provide appropriate feedback for all assignments that allows students to progress in the course.
- Maintain current grades in the college learning management system (LMS e.g. Canvas). Use the LMS communication tool as the primary tool for course communication with students.
- Be available to meet with students outside of class a minimum of 5 hours/week for student consultation hours. Availability should reflect modality of class and utilize online tools to maximize student access.
- Respond to student communication promptly (generally within 1-2 working days) and have a communication plan posted in the LMS with response times.
- Engage in service to the department such as curriculum projects, committee work, or course overload to meet enrollment demand.
- Engage in professional development activities through the on-campus training opportunities and/or through national organizations.
- Ensure courses meet ADA requirements and Canvas syllabi and courses are published by the college deadlines.
- Maintain regularly scheduled office/consultation hours.
- Integrate technology and High Impact Practices into the course.
- Assess and maintain student performance records.
- Advise students on course requirements and share extracurricular support services.
- Encourage students to complete evaluation surveys and discuss results with the Associate Dean as part of the full-time faculty evaluation process.
