Basic Function
Part‑time, hourly adjunct instructor for the English department at Kern Community College District’s East Kern Center Inmate Education Program.
ResponsibilitiesProvide instruction in a full range of English and Reading courses, using multiple teaching methodologies including distance learning and classes for incarcerated students. Participate in student recruitment and articulation of transfer programs, maintain subject‑matter currency, develop and revise curriculum, use computer and multimedia technology, and participate collegially in departmental, college and discipline‑specific professional activities.
Minimum Qualifications- Master’s degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; OR a bachelor’s in the above plus a master’s in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing or journalism; OR equivalent.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Degrees and credits must be from accredited institutions (Title V Section 53406). Foreign degrees evaluated by an accredited service.
- Work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in a diverse environment.
- Teach students with a wide range of skills, motivations, academic and vocational goals.
- Develop curriculum, including different modalities.
- Participate in recruitment and articulation activities.
- Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Maintain subject‑matter currency.
- Assess student learning outcomes.
- Knowledge of computers and willingness to explore new technologies.
- Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.
