Job Description

Western Eco Systems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic environmental and statistical consulting firm with offices across the United States and Canada, is looking for a temporary, full-time,
Biological Field Technician, in Tehachapi, California.

  • Compensation: $27–29/hr. commensurate with experience
  • End date: October 2027
  • Location: Tehachapi, California
  • Additional details: Vehicle will be provided or mileage reimbursed. Company vehicles are equipped with telematics systems for safety, operational efficiency, and compliance purposes. GPS units and other field equipment will be provided by WEST; however, field technicians must be equipped with suitable footwear (rugged hiking boots).

Job Description: Primary duties will involve conducting eagle fatality monitoring at wind energy facilities. Fieldwork may require long days in often hot (often over 100°

F) and windy conditions. Candidate must be comfortable with hazards typical of the desert environment (sharp vegetation, rattlesnakes, driving a four-wheel drive vehicle, dust, extreme heat and cold). Job duties require use of compass, range-finder, tablet, and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices. Training will be provided. An average work week may include 40 hours; however, shorter or longer hours may be necessary for some weeks, depending on the project and seasonal workloads.

Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Wildlife Biology, or an equivalent degree preferred; undergraduates or other enthusiastic workers are encouraged to apply
  • Highly proficient in identification of Mojave Desert bird species by sight and sound and able to work independently and interact positively with project manager, field supervisor, and other coworkers.
  • Candidates experienced in field bird identification will be given preference.
  • Employee must be able to appear for work on time (surveys often begin as early as sunrise), maintain focus for long periods of time, follow instructions from manager and team leader, maintain positive attitude, and accept guidance and constructive criticism. Precise and thorough data collection is essential.

Physical Requirements:

  • Applicants must be in good physical condition, as surveys will require walking /hiking up to 8 miles each day over uneven terrain, and surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and wind can be extreme. Surveyors may encounter snakes, insects, and other wildlife.

After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company. A valid driver’s license will be required.
