Position Summary: The School Counselor position provides, as a member of the school guidance team, a comprehensive guidance program for all students/school community.
Essential Functions- Coordinates activities to meet the needs of students in the assigned caseload/specific domain.
- Consults with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students learn.
- Maintains general duties in cooperation with school staff as an integral part of the instructional curriculum in alignment with:
The National Standards for School Counseling Programs and The Tempe Union High School District goals. - Addresses the knowledge, attitudes and skill competencies that all students will develop as a result of participating in a school counseling program which is based upon National Standards and necessitates the involvement of the entire school community in the integration of the academic, career and personal/social development of all students into the academic mission of each school.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Master’s Degree.
- Special training in counseling and skills related to school settings preferred.
- Preparation may include special training in counseling and skills related to school settings. School counselors are prepared for their work through the study in interpersonal relationships and behavioral sciences in graduate education courses in accredited colleges and universities preferred.
- Personality human development theories and research, including career and life skills development.
- Learning theories preferred.
- Multi-cultural and community awareness preferred.
- Educational environments preferred.
- Curriculum development preferred.
- Professional ethics preferred.
- Program planning, management and evaluation preferred.
- Application of current educational counseling technology preferred.
- Knowledge of Assessment preferred.
- Valid Arizona Department of Education School Counselor Certificate K-12.
- Valid DPS fingerprint clearance card.
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, crawling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing, reaching, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Sedentary Work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
