Job DescriptionThe College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University is seeking a collaborative and detail-oriented Instructional Designer to join the Instructional Innovation Team. This position supports college-wide efforts to improve course design and student success across a wide range of disciplines and instructional modalities, including immersion (on-campus), online, and hybrid courses. The Instructional Designer will primarily support the redesign and improvement of existing courses, with some opportunities to contribute to new course development.
Working in partnership with faculty, instructional designers, and campus partners, this role applies research-based instructional design practices to enhance clarity, alignment, accessibility, and effectiveness of learning experiences at scale.
$65,000 - $70,000 per year; DOE
Essential Duties- Collaborates with faculty and instructional partners to redesign and improve courses using established instructional design best practices.
- Supports the design and development of instructionally sound learning materials, assessments, and learning activities aligned with course goals and learning outcomes.
- Applies principles of effective course design that support student success across modalities, including online and immersion formats.
- Assists faculty in refining learning objectives and aligning content, activities, and assessments.
- Provides instructional design consultation and implementation support for courses identified through college-level instructional innovation and student success initiatives.
- Works concurrently on multiple courses and projects, managing priorities and timelines in coordination with the Instructional Innovation Team.
- Utilizes and supports the Canvas learning management system; assists with course builds, revisions, and troubleshooting as needed.
- Recommends appropriate uses of instructional technologies to support learning.
- Collaborates with colleagues across The College, academic units, and central partners (e.g., EdPlus, Enterprise Technology) as appropriate.
- Develops and maintains instructional design resources, templates, documentation, and guidelines.
- Contributes to quality assurance, accessibility review, and continuous improvement of course materials.
- Remains current on instructional design best practices, learning theories, and higher education trends.
- Experience working in a higher education environment.
- Experience supporting course redesign or large-enrollment courses.
- Familiarity with instructional design frameworks (e.g., backward design, UDL, Quality Matters).
- Experience working with instructional technologies beyond an LMS (e.g., discussion platforms, assessment tools).
- Experience using data or course performance information to inform design decisions (training provided if needed).
Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting. The position requires extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and use of a computer workstation or laptop. Periodic standing and walking may be required to attend meetings or collaborate with colleagues. The role may involve occasional bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting of materials up to 20 pounds. The ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see, and hear is required to perform essential job functions.
Regular activities require the ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing needs, and resolve competing demands in a collaborative work environment.
