Definition: Under close supervision, assists teachers with the delivery of the educational curriculum and provides assistance to students in Somerton School District No. 11.
Note: This applicant pool is open to all schools. While there may not be an immediate opening, submissions are welcome for future needs. Applicant information is retained on file for one year; new applications may be required after that period for updates.
Essential Functions: (Illustrative tasks, not exhaustive)
- Assists teachers with students in classroom settings and works with students in one‑on‑one or small group settings to facilitate learning.
- Modifies lessons to accommodate students’ needs such as English‑Spanish translation or individualized instruction, prepares class materials for projects and activities, and assists teachers in thematic units.
- Utilizes the district behavior modification program as needed.
- Assists teachers with special‑needs, bilingual, culturally diverse, resource, preschool, and special education students.
- Modifies or assists in modifying lesson plans to meet individual student needs and implements each child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Works with teachers to overcome student barriers, observes student development, tests students, and prepares documentation on progress.
- Organizes materials and activities to meet specific needs, and consults with classroom teachers on student progress.
- Performs classroom duties such as making copies, filing paperwork, monitoring students in classroom, playground, and cafeteria settings, preparing instructional materials, creating visual aids, photocopying, and preparing workstations or learning centers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of early childhood learning methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of special education or special needs accommodations.
- Knowledge of district policies and procedures affecting assigned work.
- Knowledge of district behavior modification program.
- Skill in monitoring and assisting students.
- Skill in working with special education and special needs students.
- Skill in effective oral and written communication.
- Skill in following oral and written instructions.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Physical Requirements: Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments. Requires frequent standing, walking, and sitting. Some positions may require bending and lifting up to 25 pounds. May be exposed to infectious diseases.
Qualifications: Associate’s degree or ability to pass the paraprofessional exam and one (1) year of childcare or classroom assistance experience. Fingerprint clearance card (IVP) required at the time of hiring.
