Translator/Interpreter - Signing
Facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing student and teacher(s) and/or other students. Interpret announcements, assemblies, videos and in different classroom settings. Assist teacher during non-instruction time.
1. Education and/or experience to a High school diploma or GED
2. Show proficiency in interpreting skills through one of the following: (a) Minimum passing score of 3.5 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) (b) Valid Certificate of Interpretation (CI) and/or Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) (c) Valid certificate from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) at level 3 or higher
3. A valid State of Arizona Identity Verified (IVP) fingerprint clearance card
4. Three (3) years of experience working with children (preferred)
5. Ability to obtain certification in Nonviolent Physical Crisis Intervention, CPR, and First Aid

• Interpret classroom instruction for deaf and hard of hearing student.
• Accompany student to all classes and activities including assemblies, programs, videotapes and films. Assist student in communicating in classroom with other students and the teacher.
• Convey lessons accurately and concisely.
• Tutor student on assignments as needed.
• Prepare vocabulary for lessons ensuring the lesson can be signed accurately.
• Find definition of word to interpret correctly.
• Review subject material.
• Work with teacher to choose proper sign vocabulary for each subject.
• Inform teacher of student's progress and behavior.
• Assist teacher during non-instructional time.
• Assist in supervising students, and assist other students as requested.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and/or Signing Exact English (SEE)
Knowledge of principles, practices and methods of interpretation and the ability to accurately and effectively interpret for the deaf and hard of hearing
Knowledge of early childhood or adolescent learning methods and techniques
Knowledge of District policies and procedures affecting assigned work
Knowledge of District behavior modification program
Knowledge of reading readiness skills and strategies
Knowledge of testing procedures and State standards
Skill interpreting school lessons
Skill assisting teachers with student learning
Skill monitoring and assisting students
Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
Skill communicating orally and in writing
Skill utilizing classroom supplies and equipment
Skill in maintaining confidential files and records
Skill in administering tests
Ability to work with culturally diverse students
General classroom setting, school assemblies and other school related activities Position is exposed to infectious disease
Repetitive motion in signing for students. Sign for an extended period of time. Position may require climbing, stooping, standing, walking, lifting, keyboarding, talking, hearing, and eyestrain, with repetitive motions. Position may require lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying furniture, equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds infrequently.
