Operations Engineer
The Technical Expert – Shovel Operations leads the safe, compliant, and performance-driven training and development of electric rope shovel operators across ASARCO's open pit operations, including Ray Mine (Kearny, AZ), Mission Mine (Sahuarita, AZ), and Silverbell Mine (Marana, AZ). As subject matter expert for P&H 2800 and P&H 4100 electric rope shovel operations, this role trains and mentors new and experienced operators in safe operating techniques, shovel setup and leveling, bench and floor management, dig face optimization, swing and spotting accuracy, truck loading efficiency, high-voltage trailing cable handling, equipment care, and production best practices — developing skilled operators who maximize productivity and equipment performance while maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance.
The Technical Expert – Shovel Operations partners closely with Mine Operations, Dispatch, Technical Services, Maintenance, and leadership teams at each site to improve operator capability, reduce equipment abuse and unplanned downtime, optimize loading efficiency and floor control, and support achievement of operational KPI targets.
This position ensures all training activities are conducted in compliance with ASARCO policies, procedures, operating standards, and all applicable MSHA, state, and federal health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of experience operating P&H 2800 and/or P&H 4100 electric rope shovels in an open pit mining environment.
- Proven track record as a high-production shovel operator, with demonstrated results in payload, cycle time, and floor control.
- Demonstrated proficiency in dig face management, floor control, truck loading, cable handling, and production optimization on electric rope shovels.
- Working knowledge of open pit mining operations, dispatch and grade control systems (Modular Dispatch and Caterpillar Mine Star/Terrain), and production targets.
- MSHA certification and knowledge of surface mining regulations.
- Proven communication, leadership, mentoring, and coaching skills, with the ability to work effectively across Operations, Maintenance, Dispatch, and Technical Services.
- Proficient working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to operate company vehicles on mine property.
