Role SummaryThe Estimating Trainer manages a group of senior estimators and estimators to ensure all estimates under supervision are complete and meet all expectations. The Lead Estimator is responsible for planning, preparing, and completing bid/submittal documents and cost estimates for electrical construction projects.
What You’ll Do- Work with senior estimators to create an execution plan, prepare the estimate from quantity take‑off, and complete the estimate to computer printout.
- Identify parts of the project that may be key to making a competitive estimate and evaluate possible value‑engineering cost savings.
- Review proposal specifications, drawings, and attend pre‑bid meetings to determine scope of work and required contents of the estimate.
- Provide leadership to personnel and ensure the process and procedures are followed.
- Review labor productivity and (installation unit costs where applicable) based on projected site conditions and historical data.
- Review quotes for completeness and conformance with plans and specs.
- Ensure timely completion of all client‑required documents.
- Review scope/proposal letters for bid and negotiated projects.
- Prior to issuing the formal bid package, provide the Chief Estimator with a detailed review of scope, technical requirements, and pricing.
- After the successful bid and project turnover, meet with the Project Management team to explain job scope, potential areas of attention, and other aspects for the successful transition.
- The duties and responsibilities described are general and other duties may be assigned based on the role within the business unit.
- Advanced knowledge of the assigned discipline, construction technology, estimating techniques, and cost control.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and/or engineering design drawings.
- Proficiency in arithmetic calculations required for estimating.
- Ability to estimate all types of projects and coordinate and supervise group work.
- Mentor and assist with the development of estimators.
- Identify and meet customers' needs, expectations and requirements.
- Proficient in using a computer and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
- Prioritize and manage multiple tasks, changing priorities as necessary.
- Work under time pressure and adapt to changing requirements with a positive attitude.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Self‑motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Effective and professional interaction with all levels of employees, vendors, clients, and others.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 10+ years of estimating or other relevant experience in closing construction estimates.
- Experience in Accubid Enterprise, Livecount and Bluebeam preferred.
- Experience in CAD or 3D software preferred.
- Combination of education, training and relevant experience acceptable.
- Up to 10%.
- General work environment includes sitting for long periods, standing, walking, typing, carrying, pushing, and bending. Work is conducted primarily indoors with varying environmental conditions such as fluorescent lighting and air conditioning.
- Noise level is usually low to medium; it can be loud on the jobsite.
