Fire Sprinkler Designer
We are seeking a detail-oriented Fire Sprinkler Designer to develop fire protection system designs for commercial, industrial, and residential projects. The designer will create sprinkler system layouts, perform hydraulic calculations, produce construction documents, and coordinate with engineers, architects, contractors, and AHJs to ensure code-compliant, buildable solutions. The role requires strong technical knowledge of fire sprinkler systems, familiarity with relevant codes and standards, and the ability to work within BIM workflows to deliver accurate, coordinated designs on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed fire sprinkler system layouts, riser diagrams, and zone plans for new construction and retrofit projects.
- Perform hydraulic calculations and pipe sizing to ensure systems meet required densities and pressure requirements per NFPA and local codes.
- Produce complete construction documents, including plans, details, specifications, and material lists suitable for permitting and installation.
- Create and maintain Revit/BIM models and coordinate sprinkler systems with architectural, structural, and MEP disciplines to avoid clashes and ensure constructability.
- Prepare permit submittals and address comments from authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) during the review process.
- Collaborate with project teams, including engineers, architects, contractors, and field personnel, to resolve design issues and support installation.
- Review shop drawings and submittals for compliance with design intent and applicable codes.
- Conduct field visits as needed to verify conditions, support commissioning, and assist with troubleshooting during installation.
- Maintain quality assurance procedures, perform design checks, and ensure documentation accuracy and completeness.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior designers and CAD/BIM technicians.
- Respond to RFIs, prepare cost and material take-offs, and support project scheduling and budgeting as required.
Qualifications
- Associate degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Fire Protection Technology, Architectural/Mechanical Drafting, or related discipline;
Bachelors degree in Engineering is a plus. - 3+ years of experience designing fire sprinkler systems or equivalent experience in the fire protection industry.
- NICET certification in Water-Based Systems (preferred levels IIIV) or working toward NICET certification.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit (BIM) for producing coordinated sprinkler models and construction documents.
- Experience performing hydraulic calculations using industry software (for example, HydraCALC, HASS, SprinkCAD, or similar).
- Strong knowledge of NFPA 13, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, local building and fire codes, and industry best practices for sprinkler system design.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings and integrate sprinkler systems accordingly.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and with field staff.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Willingness to conduct occasional site visits and support construction-phase coordination.
