Job Summary
Maricopa Community Colleges has an opportunity for a detail-oriented and analytical Accountant Senior to join the Controller's Office at the District Office. In this key role, you will perform advanced accounting analysis and support financial reporting, student financial services, and District-wide fiscal operations. This position interprets policies, procedures, and contract language while working with complex financial data to ensure accuracy, compliance, and informed decision-making.
The Accountant Senior will exercise independent judgment in carrying out accounting processes, contribute to strong internal controls, and support the overall financial health of the organization. This role serves as a subject matter expert, providing guidance and training to staff and leading day-to-day accounting functions. Functions
30% - Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of Financial Reporting staff
30% - Routinely performs advanced reconciliations of the general ledger and related subsystems:
- Reviews and verifies the accuracy of accounting records
20% - Consults and advises on recording of financial transactions:
- Instructs employees on technical accounting and financial reporting
- Conducts training regarding related procedures and processes, makes recommendations for implementing best practices and emerging technologies
- Researches, interprets and provides technical assistance regarding fiscal and accounting regulations, laws and guidelines
- Disseminates guidelines on accounting policies, practices and systems
15% - Reviews accounting transactions and ensures proper documentation:
- Prepares journal entries
- Maintains accurate records, prepares reports and financial statement transactions
- Participates in meeting the needs of the annual audit, including reviewing assigned financial statement line
5% - Other duties as assigned
Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution in finance, accounting, auditing, economics, business or public administration, or directly related field and four (4) years of experience that includes a combination of experience with the application of GAAP theory and practice, uniform administrative requirements, cost principles, and audit requirements for federal awards, tax laws as they apply to accounting transactions and reporting;
and/or exposure to governmental fund accounting and use of computerized accounting systems.

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.
Desired QualificationsMay be required to work nights and/or weekends. Prolonged sitting while working at a desk, may be required to lift 30lbs.
