The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients' medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation.

The RN establishes or contributes to a care plan. The plan may include activities such as administering medication, careful dosage checking, IV line initiation and maintenance, administering therapies and treatments, observing the patient and documenting observations, and consulting with physicians and other clinicians.

The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post‑treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy.

The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care and delegates when appropriate.

The RN supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new hire staff and students, assists staff and students in completing competency tasks, and continues to enhance knowledge in nursing management and patient care as required.

The RN may continue to improve patient outcomes through ongoing evaluation.

• Collect health data systematically and prioritize collection based on patient condition or needs, involving the family.
• Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate patient plan of care that is family‑centered, developmentally and age‑appropriate, and culturally relevant.
• Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient and their specific health problems.
• Develop plans of care that are individualized, reflecting current evidence‑based nursing practice, and ensuring continuity of care.
• Implement interventions in the plan of care, initiating treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures.
• Provide nursing care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs of the patient and family using a family‑centered approach.
• Evaluate progress toward outcomes, document observations, interventions, therapeutic measures, multi‑system monitoring data, and other relevant data in a retrievable form.
• Provide ongoing evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of the care plan to ensure improvement of patient outcomes and cost‑effective high‑quality care.
• Evaluate one’s own nursing practice relative to professional practice standards, statutes, regulations, and mandatory knowledge, keeping current.
• Integrate ethical principles in all aspects of practice, and enhance knowledge of cultural and diversity needs.
• Collaborate with peers and health care providers for professional development, helping foster quality practice environments.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members in patient care planning and implementation.
• Develop and evaluate evidence‑based standards of care, identifying changes needed and championing implementation and adaptation.
• Use evidence‑based research to identify strategies for improving nursing practice and patient outcomes.
• Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost when planning and delivering patient care.

• Diploma or ADN:
  Must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5 or more years of RN experience (direct or indirect) at hire.
• Associate or Diploma in Nursing:
  Must meet stroke‑specific education requirements (if applicable) before starting.
• Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN):
  Preferred.

• Must have more than 10 months experience in med‑surg or acute specialty setting.
• 1 year RN experience required for all float positions.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at hire.
• Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona required at hire.
• National unit‑specific certification preferred.
