Responsibilities

The CRN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics, as well as the Clinical Research Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice.

The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served.

The CRN serves as a coordinator, clinical nurse, educator, consultant, and leader in clinical research. The RN applies experience and knowledge to execute complex research protocols within the clinical setting and interacts daily with physicians, nurse practitioners, management, staff, patients, and families to promote clinical expertise, patient safety, resource utilization, and adherence to regulations for research.

Partners with patient and care team members to manage complex physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual symptoms of patients and families, using advanced assessment skills to identify problems and develop a comprehensive, individualized plan of care.

Provides comprehensive care based on the principles of growth and development across the lifespan, following Honor Health patient care policies and procedures, as well as department‑specific policies.

The CRN supports advancing clinical knowledge and skills, continually enhancing knowledge in nursing management and care of patient problems and conditions as required, and strives to improve patient experience and clinical outcomes while promoting a healthy work environment.

Practices theory‑based, evidence‑based nursing utilizing a Shared Governance model for decision‑making.

Essential Functions:

• Collect health data systematically, prioritize collection based on patient’s immediate needs, involve family, analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses, and use the nursing diagnosis to develop and implement a family‑centered plan of care that is developmentally and culturally appropriate.
• Practice critical thinking, analysis, and clinical judgment through the nursing process to address physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients and families; collaborate with multidisciplinary team to develop consistent care plans.
• Coordinate clinical trial procedures utilizing evidence‑based nursing practice; develop and coordinate plans of care addressing physical, psychosocial, and social needs of patients and families.
• Synthesize research protocols to provide investigators with an understanding of study requirements; monitor and report significant study events including adverse events, amendments, and closures; ensure documentation meets Code of Federal Regulations, ICH‑GCP, and institutional requirements for data integrity.
• Assist with recruitment and enrollment of patients to clinical trials; evaluate subject suitability for inclusion; maintain compliance with federal and state regulations.
• Apply the nursing process in clinical practice, monitor care and progress of patients, serve as clinical liaison for interdisciplinary care, and monitor treatment of side effects.
• Provide clinical direction, coordinate execution of research projects, interact with clinic departments, educate staff, manage project budgets where required, and collaborate with internal and external partners to complete trials.
• Integrate ethical principles in all practice aspects, enhance knowledge of culture and diversity needs for specific populations.
• Manage patient and family phone calls, collaborate with physicians or nurse practitioners as needed for orders, provide education and support.
• Maintain evidence‑based clinical practice, adhere to Code of Ethics, evaluate personal practice, and keep current knowledge of nursing practice and regulations to assess quality and effectiveness.
• Engage in professional development at institutional, local, regional, and state levels; model peer relationships, participate in preceptor or mentor programs to foster quality practice.
• Develop and evaluate evidence‑based standards of care, identify practice changes, use evidence‑based research to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.
• Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost factors in planning and delivering patient care, utilizing resources efficiently.

Associate degree nurse – must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire date or have 10 years of Registered Nurse experience (direct or indirect).BSN required.

At least 10 months of clinical research experience required, or at least 10 months of clinical nursing experience required.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) – Certification required.
• Registered Nurse (RN) – State and/or Compact State licensure required upon hire.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – Certification (or NALS) required as appropriate for assigned unit upon hire.

Applicable to clinical setting – chemo, stroke, etc. Minimum 1 year required.
