Job Summary

SEARCH has an immediate opening for Archaeologists to work on an Arizona/California border monitoring project. This full‑time, two‑year contract position may be extended and is salaried with benefits. The role involves monitoring construction sites along the southwestern border, identifying and marking sensitive cultural resources, conducting surveys, and submitting daily reports to the project lead.

Key Responsibilities
  • Use experience and a degree in archaeology to identify and target sensitive cultural resource locations, mark avoidance and buffer zones, and assess site probability based on cultural, geological, and environmental features.
  • Follow the project health and safety plan, participate in training and meetings, and lead when necessary. Provide recommendations to the Health & Safety Manager.
  • Prepare daily and weekly monitoring summaries, photo documentation, and maps; enter data into electronic devices.
  • Conduct archaeological monitoring and, when required, surveys in accordance with the research design.
  • Recognize archaeological signatures and use reasoning to evaluate resources.
  • Record accurate field notes, maps, drawings, logs, forms, tables, databases, artifact bags, box labels, and other documentation.
  • Identify artifacts and cultural features in the field.
  • Perform daily quality control of field data to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Use GPS, iPad/Arc Collector/Survey
    123, compass, transit, and other equipment to determine project limits, record work, document findings, and communicate progress.
  • Photograph artifacts, features, landscapes, historic structures, archaeological sites, and work‑in‑progress.
  • Maintain field equipment, supplies, technology, and vehicles in a clean and safe manner.
  • Collaborate closely with environmental monitors and construction crews.
  • Communicate clearly in written and oral form.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
  • Degree in Anthropology or a related field.
  • Residence in Southwestern Arizona.
  • Knowledge of Arizona cultural resources.
  • Experience in archaeological monitoring on construction sites.
  • Experience in archaeological surveying.
  • Ability to work remotely with limited supervision.
  • Reliable transportation with a clean driving record.
  • Eligibility for federal projects (U.S. citizen with no felonies).
Qualifications Preferred
  • Minimum two (2) years of southwestern border archaeology experience on government projects.
  • Meet Secretary of the Interior standards for archaeology; be an RPA or eligible to become an RPA.
  • Located in Yuma, AZ.
  • Experience using stop‑work authority on monitoring sites.
  • Strong background working on federal projects at the Arizona‑Mexico border.
