Job Purpose

The Maintenance/Porter/Landscaping staff member is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and functional shelter environment, including facility upkeep, landscaping, and minor repairs. The position collaborates with internal departments and external vendors to address maintenance needs efficiently.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform general maintenance and repair tasks, including drywall repair, painting, plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, HVAC filter replacement, appliance repair, and unit turnovers.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections and walk‑throughs to identify maintenance, safety, and operational issues.
  • Inspect and maintain building systems, equipment, lighting, doors, locks, windows, plumbing fixtures, HVAC units, and fire safety systems.
  • Remove graffiti and complete minor repairs within the scope of expertise while reporting major issues to management.
  • Support preventive maintenance programs to ensure proper operation of facility systems and grounds.
  • Maintain cleanliness of interior and exterior shelter grounds.
  • Respond to and complete maintenance work orders, documenting all completed work accurately and timely.
  • Maintain maintenance records, inspection reports, project checklists, service requests, and daily activity logs.
  • Coordinate with supervisors, staff, vendors, and subcontractors to schedule repairs, projects, and facility services.
  • Assist with vendor bidding processes, contractor oversight, and approved vendor management.
  • Purchase and maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, equipment, and facility keys.
  • Assist staff with furniture moving, hanging fixtures, donation pickups, trash removal, and other operational support tasks.
  • Perform grounds maintenance, landscaping, roof debris removal, and general exterior upkeep.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards and properly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Identify safety hazards, post caution signage, and recommend corrective actions to maintain a safe environment.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to support organizational goals and quality service delivery.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff as needed.
  • Safely perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, bending, stooping, and working in extreme weather conditions and uneven terrain.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications
  • Education:

    High school diploma or GED required. Vocational/trade certificate a plus.
  • Basic skills:

    carpentry, drywall repair, indoor and outdoor painting, plumbing repair, drain clearing, electrical installation and repair, appliance troubleshooting and repair, key making, HVAC maintenance, restorations and remodeling, sprinkler system programming and repairs preferred.
  • Experience:

    1–2 years in general maintenance and repair; 1–2 years in a customer‑service focused environment.
  • Attendance:
    Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance as determined at the employer’s sole discretion.
  • Licenses:
    Driver’s License with clear record.
  • Vehicle:
    Must have daily use of a vehicle without prior notice.
  • Other:
    Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, be available and willing to travel to various locations as required.
