Position: Utility Piping Specialist (Utilities)- Tempe campus

Skilled Crafts and Trade Assistant 3 Non-Exempt

Facilities Development and Management (Utilities Distribution) seeks a Utility Piping Specialist to assist with steam infrastructure, in addition to the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems, including performing complex and precision work related to utility piping systems. This position is located at the Tempe Main Campus, but may require work at other campus locations based on program need.

Responsibilities
  • Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, including performing complex and precision work related to utility piping systems.
  • Locate, repair, and replace malfunctioning parts using hand tools (screwdrivers, pliers, crescent wrenches, and piping wrenches) and power tools (drills, hand‑held drain cleaning machines).
  • Inspect mechanical system components and use soldering and brazing tools to perform precision techniques in the design, layout, fabrication, joining, and repair of metals, piping, and pressure vessels.
  • Work with drawings and specifications.
  • Install and maintain steam supply and condensation return lines, steam traps, and pressure reducing valves.
  • Install and maintain chilled water supply and return lines.
  • Install and repair domestic water lines and drain lines.
  • Install and maintain RO supply and return lines.
  • Use work order systems (TMA) in response to maintenance requests.
  • Prioritize work based on critical needs assessment.
  • Assist other trades as needed.
  • Use ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Must have four years of plumbing and/or mechanical-pipe fitting systems experience; or completion of a four‑year federally approved technical training program in plumbing; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience in studying plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirements and sequence of repairs or replacement.
  • Knowledge of applying welding standards as defined by current trade practice (e.g., ASME, ASTM).
  • Knowledge of the mechanical operation of equipment such as pumps, boilers, cooling towers and chillers.
  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment and materials common to the plumbing and welding trades.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes.
  • Knowledge of work order systems (TMA).
  • Experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and utility piping systems.
Working Environment
  • Perform work in dirty environments with inadequate lighting, extreme noise, extreme temperatures, confined spaces (tunnels, man holes, and vaults), restricted movement and hazardous materials.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (safety glasses, face shield, negative pressure respirator, gloves, and hearing protection).
  • Climb ladders and work off ladders using hand and power tools to repair plumbing and drainage systems.
  • Work off boom or crane trucks to make repairs above six feet.
  • Travel throughout campus to various research buildings as needed.
  • Lift and carry objects up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to push and/or pull weight loaded maintenance cart.
  • Drive university vehicle/cart.
  • May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment requiring safety precautions and/or specific processes.
  • Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.
