Utility Piping Specialist
Facilities Development and Management (FDM) at Arizona State University seeks a Utility Piping Specialist to be a part of a facilities maintenance team at the Polytechnic campus, with primary duties within newly constructed research buildings.
This role supports complex lab and research operations, and ensures high-performance building systems function optimally for ASU's Knowledge Enterprise and the broader campus community. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical skills, collaborative experience in research-intensive environments, and a proactive approach to problem-solving in research-intensive environments that rely on cutting-edge technology with global impact.
This position is located on the Polytechnic campus however may require working at other ASU campus locations based on program need.
This position will remain open until filled.
Essential Duties:
- Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems, including performing complex and precision work related to utility piping systems.
- Locate, repair, and replace malfunctioning parts using hand tools (e.g. screwdrivers, pliers, crescent wrenches, and piping wrenches) and power tools (e.g. drills, handheld drain cleaning machines).
- Inspect mechanical system components and use soldering and brazing tools to perform precision techniques in the design, layout, fabrication, joining, and repair of metals, piping, and pressure vessels.
- Work with drawings and specifications.
- Install and maintain sprinkler systems.
- Install and repair water lines and drain lines.
- Prioritize work based on critical needs assessment.
- Assist other trades as needed.
- This position requires working a rotating on-call/stand-by schedule and may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Salary Range: $23.73 per hour, commensurate with experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.

Qualifications:
- One (1) year lead experience in hospitals/schools/large manufacturing and/or commercial/industrial facilities.
- Evidence of working within research laboratory, clean room, high bay, administrative and office spaces.
- Higher education work setting
- Experience in: studying plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirements and sequence of repairs or replacement as required.
- Knowledge of applying welding standards as defined by current trade practice (examples include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) or American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.
- Knowledge of the mechanical operation of equipment such as pumps, boilers, cooling towers and chillers.
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment and materials common to the plumbing and welding trades.
- Knowledge of applicable codes.
- Experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing and utility piping systems.
- Experience in the design, fabrication, joining and repair of metals, piping, equipment and structures.
- Evidence of effective communication skills.
Working Environment:
- Activities are performed in a variety of internal and external settings.
- Perform work in dirty environments with inadequate lighting, extreme noise, extreme temperatures, confined spaces (e.g. tunnels, man holes, and vaults), restricted movement and hazardous materials.
- Wear personal protective equipment (e.g. safety glasses, face shield, negative pressure respirator, gloves, and hearing protection).
- Climb ladders and work off ladders using hand and power tools to repair plumbing and drainage systems.
- Work off boom or crane trucks to make repairs above six feet.
- Travel throughout campus to various research buildings as needed.
- Lift and carry objects up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to push and/or pull weight loaded maintenance cart.
- Drive University vehicle/cart.
- May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed, and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator).
- Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations.
- Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
