Position: Low Voltage Technician 1 Traveler

Job Title: Communications Technician I

Job Summary

The Communications Technician I must perform the technical responsibilities of a Cable Installer and function as a lead member of a technical team. The Fiber Network Technician will coordinate small groups of installers in the performance of daily workload including adherence to Company safety and quality standards.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install a work area outlet for floor or wall (terminate CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks, mount face plates and surface mount boxes correctly, adhere to IES COMMERCIAL labeling standards).
  • Build closets (mount and install backboards, cross connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware).
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment and cable as required.
  • Complete all IDC connections (terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels).
  • Perform testing: continuity test horizontal and riser cable, use volt‑ohmmeter, troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cable, use tone set.
  • Identify active voice or data circuits.
  • Assume responsibility for the effective performance of the crew, provide necessary training, and coordinate personnel and timeline to complete project.
  • Fully complete all IES COMMERCIAL paperwork accurately and on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, tool transfers and others as required).
  • Adhere to and participate in all Company, customer and industry quality and safety standards and regulations.
  • Complete other responsibilities as assigned.

  • Acts as the company liaison for interface with customer representatives.
  • Possesses proven problem‑solving, critical thinking, reading, writing, and oral presentation skills.
  • Can work at heights, off ladders and in confined spaces; can lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds.
  • Can see and distinguish different colors, read small print, and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
  • Can travel within the branch territory and/or regional territory as needed. Regular attendance is mandatory.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in telecommunications or related technical field with ability to supervise others.
  • Proficiency with the listed tools.
  • Proven skill level to interpret blueprints and other project documents, including specifications, reporting, and quality requirements.
  • Knowledge of universal communications color codes.
  • Meeting the company minimum driving standards.
